Harvard Welcomes Eight Grapplers for 2009-10 Season

Jay Weiss, the David G. Bunning Head Coach for Harvard Wrestling has announced the addition of eight freshmen to the Harvard wrestling team for the upcoming 2009-10 season.


The Crimson had at least one All-American for the fourth year in a row in 2009 and finished in the top 50 at the NCAA Championships for the 11th time in the last 12 years.


Weiss adds a 125 pounder and seven middle weights to his line-up. The newcomers, who come from seven different states, will provide much needed depth for the Crimson.


Harvard returns two All-Americans and another NCAA qualifier next season.

Nicholas Brazeau/Kalamazoo, Mich./Mattawan High School/149/157

Wrestled and played soccer for Mattawan High School … Captained the wrestling team as a junior and senior … Earned all-state and all-regional honors in 2008 and was a two-time academic all-state recipient … A three-time all-district and three-time all-conference selection … Named wrestling team MVP and received the coaches award as a senior … Picked up academic all-state honors in soccer in his final season … Holds Mattawan high school record for most wins in a season and is second on the all-time wins list … Member of the National Honor Society, the Student Athletic Advisory Committee and student government … Received the Principal Leadership Award in 2009 … Uncle, Denis Inesman ’87 played football for the Crimson.


Anthony Buxton/ Blairstown, N.J./Blair Academy/141/149

Started all four years of high school at 140 pounds … Earned all-league honors four times and was a three-time all-state honoree … Blair Academy won four national prep championships and two national championships … Placed fourth at FILA Northeast Junior Regional in 2007 … Named to the Headmaster’s List for Academics in 2009.


Spencer Friedman/Los Angeles, Calif./Harvard-Westlake/141

Earned four varsity letters in wrestling after starting all four years … Served as team captain in 2009 … Was name all-league in 2008 and 2009 … Received the team MVP award as a senior … A National Merit Scholar Finalist … Member of the Harvard-Westlake Model UN … Also a member of the L.A. Teenage Republicans, the Harvard-Westlake Chinese Cultural Club and the Harvard-Westlake Jewish Student Union …. Served as an administrative assistant at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Emergency Operations Bureau … Father, Josh, graduated from Harvard in 1976 and played junior varsity tennis for the Crimson.


Adam Hogue/Twinsburg, Ohio/Blair Academy/157/165

Played football, baseball and wrestled in high school … Captained wrestling team as a senior … National Prep champion and three-time National Prep All-American … Beast of the East runner-up and Ironman place winner … Named first-team All-Prep state and first-team All-Mid Atlantic Prep League in baseball as a junior … Was a part of two national championship teams and two national championship runner-up finishes … Member of the Headmaster’s List … Involved in student government … Active member of Pin Down Hunger, diabetes, autism and cancer charity events.


Steven Keith/Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River/125

A five-year starter and letterwinner in wrestling … National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) Junior National All-American … Three-time all-state honoree … Won state title as a sophomore and a senior … Three-time Section XI champion … Named Section XI Most Outstanding Wrestler in 2008 and received Loi Giani Award for best wrestler in Section XI in 2009 … Received Section XI Sportsmanship Award … FILA Cadet National Champion and Outstanding Wrestler … Three-time New York state junior national duals team member … Compiled a 186-15 collegiate record after going 46-0 as a senior …. Member of the National Honor Society … Earned a spot on the Principle’s List five times … Student Against Destructive Decisions member.


David Lalo/Overland Park, Kan./Olathe East Senior High School/165

Letterman in football and wrestling … Earned first-team All-Olathe and first-team All-Sunflower League honors as an offensive lineman during senior season … Picked up honorable mention All-Sunflower League honors as a junior … Sunflower League champion as a junior … Kansas Regional champion as a junior and senior … Kansas state medalist in 2008 and 2009 … Earned All-Sun Country honors as a junior and was named Kansas City Metro Senior All-Star Dual selection in 2009 … Was the Olathe East Outstanding Male Athlete of the Year as a senior … Football team was regional champions in junior and senior seasons … Member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society … Received the President’s Education Award and was a KSHSAA Citizenship Award nominee in 2006 … Won the Harvard Book Prize as a junior … AP Scholar and National Merit Finalist.


Paul Liguori/Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh High School/141

Earned six varsity letters in wrestling and served as team captain for three years … A five-time All-Nassau County selection …. Won the Nassau County championships four times … Earned all-state honors four times … A two-time New York State champion … National runner-up as a sophomore … Greco Roman Fargo All-American and New York state freestyle champion … Finished career with a 217-16 record … Holds state record for 122 consecutive wins … Recorded 123 varsity pins … Led Wantagh to first ever title at New York State tournament … Member of the National Honor Society … A Wendy’s National High School Heisman Award nominee … A National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) Academic All-American … Member of the National Society of High School Scholars.


Kyle Roy/Cohasset, Mass./Milton Academy/165/174

Earned three letters in football … Was a four-time All-Independent School League selection … A four-time ISL finalist and three-time northern New England champion … New England Prep champion as a junior … Two-time team MVP … Owned a 105-3 high school record … Father, Peter, is a Harvard graduate .. His aunt, Jane Roy ’78, rowed for Radcliffe and served as captain … Uncle, Steve Roy ’68, and Aunt, Ellen Roy ’82, also graduated from Harvard.
