YORKTOWN – The Yorktown High School wrestling team took a summer trip to Disney World in Orlando, Fla., late last month — but instead of souvenirs, the team brought home another national championship title.

The team spent June 22-25 competing in the AAU Scholastic Wrestling Duals, having won national honors there in 2008 as well.

Yorktown was placed in the H pool at the AAU Scholastic Duals — Community 2 division, a pool including teams from Montana, North Carolina, Indiana, Pennsylvania and Ohio, according to YHS Coach Trent McCormick.

The Tigers won the H pool with the following scores:
• Yorktown 66, Team Sydney (MT) 9.
• Yorktown 71, Gibbons (NC) 0.
• Yorktown 43, Huskies (IN) 12.
• Yorktown 59, Red Lions (PA), 13.
• Yorktown 70, Austintown (OH) 9.

The final two days of the event were spent competing in a bracketed tournament in which teams were seeded based on their performance in their respective pools. Results of the final bracketed tournament were:
• #1 Yorktown 76, #4 Westfield (IN) 0.
• #1 Yorktown 58, #2 Loganville (GA) 9.
• #1 Yorktown 50, #1 Clay HS (FL) 13
• #1 Yorktown 42, #1 Dakota HS (IL) 24.

Jordan Dulaney was named recipient of the Technical Superiority Award, one of two special awards presented at the end of competition. (In 2008, Yorktown’s Kyle Mosier was voted Outstanding Wrestler, the other special award.)

Five Yorktown wrestlers — Jake Anderson, Trent Castner, Jordan Dulaney, Devon Jackson and Jimmy King — went undefeated (9-0), earning them first-team All American status.

Other All Americans from Yorktown, earning silver or bronze medals, were Brock Bevans (bronze), Cody Fellers (silver), Andrew Hiestand (silver), Ross Janney (silver), Kyle Mosier (silver) and Caleb Smith (bronze).
The team began practicing for the tournament as early as May 20, and went to Florida three days early to have a combined team camp with Springstead High School in Brooksville, Fla.

When not practicing or competing, the team took advantage of the chance to see some local attractions, including a visit to Rogers Park, a local swimming area fed by a natural spring which is locally known as the Wiki Wauchee river, and a trip to Clearwater Beach to swim in the Gulf of Mexico, McCormick said in an e-mail.

“The trip was a huge success,” McCormick wrote. “Not only did we come away with a national title, but more importantly we grew closer as a team.”
