Three time Hawaii State Champion and new Stanford wrestler Dylan Rush goes to the Mat with TOM. The UCLA Football transfer is excited about getting back on the mat and making some noise.
TOM: If you could wrestle anyone from the past who would it be and why?
DR: I would wrestle Milo the Greek to know if the great wrestlers in ancient times were as good as wrestlers now.
TOM: What are you most looking forward to this upcoming season?
DR: I’m looking forward to getting back on the mat after a three year layoff. It will be nice to really compete again.
TOM: Three styles Freestyle, Folkstyle and Greco which do your prefer and why?
DR: I prefer Folkstyle because it has the foundations of the American attitude built within it. It demands that you be tough and you win not by being stylish or by playing to cute rules, you win by dominating your opponent and controlling him completely.
TOM: MMA good or bad for wrestling and why?
DR: MMA is great for wrestling. We see high school wrestling up all across the country because kids see great fighters with tremendous wrestling pedigrees. MMA gives wrestling the TV exposure that it has never had.
TOM: Have you considered a MMA career after you are done competing?
DR: I have already had a small ameture MMA career, and I plan on fighting once I am done with my degree. I love single combat sports and I have competed in Judo, Tae Kown Do, Boxing, and a couple of other styles so MMA is just a natural progression for me.
TOM: What advice would you give to an up and coming wrestler?
DR: I would tell a young wrestler to decide whether or not he truly loves wrestling, loves everything about it. It is too hard a sport to compete at a high level in if you don’t love it. If he is really passionate about wrestling, then he should work as hard as he can and ask questions. Wrestlers are the most humble and helpful athletes in my opinion and Ive never met one that was unwilling to help a young wrestler.
TOM: List three things fans may not know about you but should?
DR: 1.I don’t think of myself as a traditional heavyweight-just a slug that pushes people around. 2. I think that cross training with other combat sports is an excellent way to stop yourself from being intimidated. I know that I won’t be intimidated by anyone because Ive traded punches with some great fighters and that hurts a lot more than anything on a wrestling mat. 3. I love to work with young athletes and have been both a wrestling and football coach at the middle and high school levels. Any young athlete who would like to talk to me should not be intimidated about approaching me about anything.
