“Cage fighting” is a misnomer, said Josh Lawrence, president and promoter of Michigan’s Genesis Fighting Championship, “mixed martial arts” is a more proper label.
On Saturday, the Grand Blanc-based fighting spectacle comes to Kellogg Arena for its annual “Halloween Havoc.” Eight amateur Michigan title-holders will be competing, Lawrence said, in a mesh of fighting styles that include everything from Brazilian ju jitsu to freestyle wrestling to Thai boxing.
“It’s many different styles combined into one,” Lawrence said. “It’s everything that works in reality combat and this type of sport combat. They utilize the best punches, the best kicks, the best grappling techniques and mold it all into their own style and that’s what’s used for competition.”
