Council-Rock-hawkAssistant wrestling coach Travis McCormack of Council Rock South received some surprising news from his head coach, Brad Silimperi, one recent day at school. McCormack learned he had just been named the top assistant wrestling coach in the nation by Wrestling USA, a magazine that represents the national governing body of the sport.

“He’s the one who presented me with the award and plaque, and he surprised me with it in school one day,” McCormack said. “It was a pretty big shock. I thought he was joking at first, and sure enough he pulled out the evidence.”

McCormack has been with the Council Rock South team since the school opened eight years ago, and the program has done very well under McCormack and Silimperi with a Class AAA state championship title in 2005. This season, the Golden Hawks are ranked as the 29th-best team in the nation, according to the Amateur Wrestling News Prep 40′s preseason poll.

Around Council Rock South and the wrestling community, McCormack goes by the nickname “Trap,” a name given to him by his family when he was a toddler.
