EAGLES SINK VIKINGS, 35-6

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)—A great start ended with an even bett er fi nal result as the Eastern Michigan University wrestling team claimed victory eight of 10 matches Thursday evening, Nov. 19, to roll past Cleveland State University, 35-6. The Eagles stormed out to a 35-0 lead, helped in large part by pins from seniors Justi n Brandel (Saginaw, Mich.-Swan Valley), Josh Lewis (West Liberty, Ohio-Salem) and Josh Lewis (West Liberty, Ohio-Salem), before surrendering a point against.

With the win, the Eagles improve to 2-1 on the season, while the Vikings fall to 0-1. Lewis made an early statement for the Eagles in the 197 lbs. match with a pin of Gahad Suleiman at the 1:29 mark to put the Eagles on top, 6-0. Wade followed Lewis’s performance with a pin of his own at the 2:56 mark of the heavyweight bout to make it a 12-0 EMU advantage.

Then at 125 lbs., true freshman Gregory Egbert (Ypsilanti , Mich.-Ypsilanti ) earned his fi rst collegiate dual victory
with a 6-2 decision over Zachary Zupancic.

Following Egbert was sophomore Andrew Novak (New Boston, Mich.-New Boston) who claimed a 9-4 victory at 133 lbs. Frank Sade (Ypsilanti , Mich.-Norway) (141 lbs.) and J.J. Johnson (Rockford, Mich.-Rockford) (149 lbs.), each recorded major decisions in their respecti ve bouts to put a stranglehold on the Vikings, 26-0, after six matches. Sade defeated Ronald Butler, 11-1, while Johnson topped Dan Casti llo, 14-1.

In the 157 lbs. match, freshman Aaron Sulzer (Cleveland, Ohio-Holy Name) kept the Eagles’ winning ways in
tact with a 6-2 decision over Corey Carlo. Sulzer trailed aft er one period, but used two near-fall points, a takedown
and two riding points to give the Eagles their seventh straight win of the evening and a 29-0 lead. Brandel turned-in the fi nal six points of the night for the Eagles with a pin of Dusti n Doty at the 2:21 mark of the 165 lbs. match. The Eagles took a 35-0 lead.

The Vikings got on the board late as Marcus Eff ner bested junior Nick Hendrick (Columbia, Mich.-Powers Catholic), 3-1, at 174 lbs., and Nick Anthony edged freshman Travis Stanback (Solon, Ohio-Solon), 1-0, at 184 lbs. The two victories by CSU only put a dent in the fi nal score, 35-6, in favor of the Eagles.

The Eagles accumulated over 20 minutes of riding ti me en route to their biggest win since a 40-6 drubbing of Harper College, Dec. 21, 2008.

The Eagles return to Bowen Field House for their fi rst home match of the season Sunday, Nov. 22, against Big Ten Conference foe Northwestern University. Acti on is slated for 2 p.m.
