TOM: What brought you to VT?

JG: What brought me to my current school was a combination of the youth of the team and the fact that I knew this coaching staff was building a team for the future. On the other side I also wanted to go to a school that was known for good academics because I knew that graduating from such a school would be very beneficial in the future. I felt as though VT fulfilled both my wrestling and academic needs.

TOM: What are you most looking forward to this upcoming season?

JG: This season I am looking forward to getting back on top of the ACC conference as a team, making another trip to the national tournament, and becoming a more technical wrestler.

TOM: What are your long term goals in wrestling?

JG: My long term goals in wrestling are to be an All-American and eventually a National champion.

TOM: MMA good or bad for wrestling and why?

JG: MMA is definitely good for wrestling because it gives wrestlers a professional career to look forward to. MMA is a great sport that is to this day continuing to grow and you see more and more wrestlers getting involved in it after their careers are over.

TOM: Have you considered a MMA career after you are done competing?

JG: I have considered wanting to do MMA after I’m done competing, even though my parents might not quite like the idea of it. However I think that it’s a great sport for wrestlers and history shows that some of the most successful MMA fighters were also very successful wrestlers.

TOM: As a recruit what were the main things you considered why picking a school?

JG: As a recruit the main things I looked for were room for growth; meaning were they building for the future, improving and making strides every year. How does the team operate together meaning are they a unit do they feed off of each other. The coaching staff meaning does each one bring something different and unique to the room. Can I see myself being at that school for 5 years? And what school would give me the best chance to fulfill my goals.

TOM: What person has had the biggest impact on your wrestling career and why?

JG: There are 3 people that have had a big impact on my career, they are my mom and dad; Carl and Michelle Garnett, and Johnny Johnson my club team coach at Raw 241. My mom and dad have done everything in their power to make sure I had every opportunity to be successful in life and in wrestling supporting me all the way. Johnny Johnson my club team coach helped me to turn that corner in High School. He was the one who was able to elevate my wrestling to another level which really helped me be very prepared for what was to come in college. I owe a lot of my success to all three of those individuals.
