AWN 2013-14 Preseason Division I College Wrestling Rankings

AWN_D1_RANKING

Amateur Wrestling News has released its initial Division I Individual College Wrestling Rankings for the 2013-14 season. AWN, the longest-running publication in the country devoted to covering all phases of amateur wrestling, will be releasing its rankings on Tuesdays during the wrestling season. Each week, AWN will list the ranked wrestlers with their record and previous ranking.

Eight past NCAA champions sit atop the preseason rankings. NCAA champions from 2013 Jesse Delgado (Illinois), Logan Stieber (Ohio State), Kendric Maple (Oklahoma), Derek St. John (Iowa), Chris Perry (Oklahoma State), Ed Ruth (Penn State) and Tony Nelson (Minnesota) enter the season ranked No. 1. Previous NCAA champion David Taylor of Penn State is ranked No. 1 at 165 pounds, while 2010 NCAA champion Andrew Howe of Oklahoma is ranked second at 174 pounds.

Stieber and Maple move up a weight class. Stieber, a two-time NCAA champion at 133 pounds, will wrestle at 141 pounds this season, while Maple, last year’s champion at 141 pounds, will move up to 149 pounds.

Eight different schools have top-ranked wrestlers, with only Iowa and three-time defending team champions Penn State having two wrestlers slotted No. 1. Oregon State’s Taylor Meeks is ranked No. 1 at 197 pounds, while Tony Ramos of Iowa is ranked No. 1 at 133 pounds — the only two wrestlers without an NCAA championship already to be ranked No. 1 in the preseason.

The USA Today/NWCA/AWN Division I Coaches Poll will be released at a later date.

Wrestlers who are known to be taking redshirts are not listed, as well as wrestlers who are expected to be injured and out of the lineup for an undetermined amount of time are also not listed. AWN does not rank wrestlers who are ineligible and removes wrestlers from the rankings after they miss two weeks of a team’s officially scheduled competition. This does not include open events not on a team’s official schedule. Each week, AWN will list notes following the rankings on wrestlers removed for those reasons and will list wresters inactive due to injury. Redshirts whose status was clear prior to the season will not be listed in the notes, however, wrestlers who are competing in competition (unattached) could be noted if they are ranked and then the option to redshirt is exercised.

Rankings notes, questions and comments can be directed to rankings@theopenmat.com. All records are from the NWCA Scorebook.
