Maryland’s Jimmy Sheptock Named ACC Wrestler of the Week
Terrapin Senior Captures 184-pound title at prestigious Midlands Championships
GREENSBORO, N.C. –Maryland senior Jimmy Sheptock (Northampton, Pa.) was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week for his performance in capturing the 184-pound title at the Ken Kraft/Midlands Championship Dec. 29-30 in Evanston, Ill.
Sheptock, who moved up to second nationally in the 184-pound class in the most recent Intermat national rankings, pushed his record to 18-0 on the season with six straight wins, including a 3-1 decision over Iowa’s Ethen Lofthouse, who, at the time, was the nation’s second-ranked 184-pound wrestler. Sheptock, entered the match ranked third nationally, but moved to second with the win over Lofthouse.
The win over Lofthouse also gave Sheptock the 184-pound title in the Midlands Championships.
In being named ACC Wrestler of the Week, Sheptock was chosen over a trio of strong performances from NC State sophomore Nick Gwiazdowski (Delanson, N.Y.), who won four of five matches, losing only to Minnesota’s Tony Nelson, 1-0, the nation’s top-ranked wrestler in the 285-pound class; Virginia junior Joe Spisak (Boiling Springs, Pa.), who won five of six matches including a triumph over the nation’s No. 2 wrestler, Chris Dardanes of Minnesota, losing only to the nation’s third-ranked wrestler, Zain Retherford of Penn State, in overtime in the 141-pound class; and North Carolina junior Evan Henderson (New Florence, Pa.), who won five of seven matches in the 141-pound class, losing only to top ten opponents.
The 2014 Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestling Championships will be held March 8 at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va.
