Newberry All-American Kelly Anundson signs with Bellator MMA

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – Former Newberry College wrestling All-American Kelly Anundson has signed a multi-fight deal with Bellator MMA, as announced by the Guardian Sports Group earlier Thursday.

Anundson was a two-time All-American at Newberry and has won multiple medals at the World Grappling Championships. Now based out of Florida, Anundson carries a 6-2 professional record into his stint with Bellator. His last five wins have all come in the first period of the fight.

In his interview with Guardian, Anundson said the promotion offers just what he’s looking for in an organization.

“I was looking for a permanent place where I can get consistent fights with top competition in the world,” said the Team Guardian light-heavyweight, who has notched first-round finishes in five of his past seven pro fights.

Anundson has his sights set on making it into Bellator MMA’s light-heavyweight tournament and ultimately winning the organization’s 205-pound title. Standing in his way is undefeated Swiss striking specialist Volkan Oezdemir at Bellator MMA 115, April 4 in Reno, Nev, which is next door to Anundson’s hometown of Sparks.

Anundson has trained with Oezdemir in the past and has even conducted seminars at his school. This will be the first time Anundson has fought someone he has known prior to fight night. But he maintains it will be business as usual when the cage door locks.

“I’m going to go out there and hopefully beat him in the first round,” Anundson said. “If not, I’m going to go out, implement my game plan and take control of the fight.”

“I am excited to see Kelly make a run for the Bellator title,” added Guardian Sports Group president Charles McCarthy. “We are starting out with a big fight to make a big statement.”
