2017 UWW Greco-Roman Junior World Team Trials Preview

Forget about Cirque du Soleil or the Criss Angel show this week in Las Vegas. The wrestling world will be in Vegas to watch outstanding wrestlers from every age group put it all on the line. On Thursday, April 27th, some of the best high school and young college scrappers will attempt to become part of the Junior World Team in Greco. All UWW Greco-Roman champions will qualify to represent Team USA August 1st-6th, 2017 in Tampere, Finland, at the Junior World Championships. 63, 70, and 79 kg are not UWW international weights, but all other weight classes have a world team spot up for grabs.  Wrestling begins at 9 am pacific on Thursday with the finals scheduled for 3 pm pacific.

Please note, the entry list for the tournament will not be final until Tuesday at 9 am pacific so more wrestlers could still register.

74 kg

A 2015 World Cadet team member and a 2017 NJCAA All-American will lead the way in this weight class. Jake Allar of the Minnesota Storm was triumphant in winning the 69 kg bracket in 2015 and representing the U.S. at the Cadet World Championships in Sarajevo, Bosnia, and Herzegovina. Last year, he moved up to the Junior Division where he ended up third in this weight. Trey Meyer of the Inland Northwest Wrestling Training Center was a member of the North Idaho wrestling team where he garnered NJCAA All-American honors at 165-pounds. Regan Bye of Legends of Gold currently competes for Augustana University in South Dakota. In 2014, he garnered All-American honors at Fila Cadet Nationals. Ryan Cummings competes for Northern Michigan University, the top Greco-Roman program in the country, and was eighth in this tournament last season. Keep an eye on the high school senior Jaron Chavez of Suples wrestling club. He began his Greco training back in California with the CYC Club, the same club that produced Olympian Robbie Smith.
