2017 Women’s Freestyle Nationals Junior Preview

McKayla Campbell

Sunday the UWW Juniors have the stage all to themselves at the tournament that many will always call Body Bar, the 2017 Women's Freestyle Nationals. Beginning at 9 am central time, the best Juniors in the country will vie for a spot on their world team which will compete in Tampere, Finland, this August. All weight classes except for 79.5 kg will be contested in Finland, so expect some intense battles as many of these athletes look for a return trip to the World Championships.

59 kg

There is plenty of strength at 59 kg, but it is hard to be certain who will emerge to earn this spot. Breanna Douglas (Kansas) was second to eventual Cadet world bronze medalist Alara Boyd a year ago and finished third in Fargo. Michaela Beck (New York) made both finals and won a Junior title last summer in Fargo, adding to her impressive resume. Hailey Cox (Utah) won this event two years ago and has been good, but not great since. She'll be looking to get back on top. Nicole Joseph (California) spent the year in the line-up for four-time defending WCWA champions King University after finishing fourth in Fargo. Emma Bruntil (Washington) was a Fargo finalist and finished fifth here in 2016. Cara Broadus (Connecticut) is another 2016 Fargo double All-American, she won Cadets, that has a chance to make some noise. Any of those wrestlers winning wouldn't be a huge surprise. Others such as Abigail Nette (Louisiana), Arian Carpio (Arizona), Elisabet Perez-Vega, Erin Redford (Washington), Alexia Ward (Oregon), Shaina Murray (New Jersey), Rebekah Cordova (Texas), and Selina Brown (Indiana) have all had success at this level as well. This is a classic bracket that could be wrestled 10 times and result in 10 different outcomes.

1st – Michaela Beck (New York)

2nd – Nicole Joseph (California)

3rd – Breanna Douglas (Kansas)

4th – Cara Broadus (Connecticut)

5th – Emma Bruntil (Washington)

6th – Hailey Cox (Utah)

7th – Arian Carpio (Arizona)

8th – Erin Redford (Washington)
