One of the elite preseason tournaments in the Midwest is scheduled to take place Sunday, Sept. 10th, 2017, at Carroll High School, in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The tournament will award the top four finishers per weight class the opportunity to enroll early at the Super 32 tournament. The event has become a favorite tournament to wrestle-in, and the numbers don’t lie. In 2010, when the first tournament was wrestled, it attracted 171 wrestlers. In 2016, the numbers almost quadrupled with 647 athletes. The Open Mat looks at some of the favorite wrestlers in each weight class.
Returning champion Jacob Moran (Indiana) will attempt to beat the competition and claim a second IHPO title. Last year, he won the 109-pound weight bracket despite only placing eighth at the IHSA state tournament. Moran is coming off of placing fourth at Fargo Junior Nationals. A couple of Fargo Cadet place winners that should make a run at the title include Dustin Norris (Ohio) and Brayden Lowery (Indiana). Norris got the 12-2 tech-fall over Lowery in the seventh-place bout at Fargo. Norris is a scrappy individual that will certainly give trouble to any opponent he faces. Giving up some weight might be an issue for Colton Drousias (Indiana) who was triumphant in winning Folkstyle Nationals at 100-pounds. Nevertheless, with some good technique and will-power, Drousias could find his way onto the podium. Keep an eye on two-time IHSWCA Middle School State champion Jesse Mendez (Indiana) as he will make his debut competing against high school opponents.
1st – Jacob Moran (Indiana)
2nd – Dustin Norris (Ohio)
3rd – Brayden Lowery (Indiana)
4th – Jesse Mendez (Indiana)
