After a 28-4 redshirt season, there were high expectations for Taylor Venz (Nebraska) as he entered the lineup at 184 pounds. On the opening weekend of the season, he looked unstoppable. Competing at the Daktronics Open in South Dakota, Venz pinned his first two opponents without giving up a single point. Facing Minnesota’s Owen Webster, who finished third in Division III last season for Augsburg, in the semi-finals, it looked like Venz might be in trouble, giving up the opening takedown and getting ridden the rest of the first period. However, the Cornhusker remained clam, promptly cradling up Webster at the start of the second frame to get another fall, this one in 3:27. Veteran Brady Ayers (South Dakota State) was the last man standing between Venz and the tournament title, but he too couldn’t stay off his back against Taylor. After a pair of takedowns, Venz added eight nearfall points in the first period to lead 12-1, eventually closing out his outstanding day with a 17-1 tech-fall. For the tournament, the redshirt freshman had three falls and three points given up. Taylor Venz is TOM’s College Wrestler of the Week!
