Midway Report: Notes from Day One of the 2017 Powerade Tournament

Powerade

Day one of the Powerade is in the books. Wrestling has been conducted up to the semifinals in the championship bracket and the round of 12 in the consolations. So far, not a whole lot of upsets have taken place. Individually and from a team standpoint, most everything is going as expected. Wyoming Seminary and Lake Highland Prep have separated themselves from the rest of the pack, while Wyoming Seminary is starting to get a comfortable lead in their quest for the title. There is still the potential for a pair of huge matches as detailed below, in the Powerade Day One notes.

-All fourteen number one seeds have advanced to the semifinals

-All fourteen number two seeds have advanced to the semifinals

-120, 126, 138, 160, 182 and 195 saw all four top seeds advance.

-Four freshmen made the semi’s 106 – Alejandro Herrera-Rondon (Seneca Valley), 113 – Nic Bouzakis (Lake Highland Prep), 132 – Carson Manville (Wyoming Seminary), 152 – Trey Kibe (Mifflin County)

-No freshmen were given seeds at this tournament. So out of the five unseeded wrestlers who made the semi’s, only one was a non-freshman.

-Wyoming Seminary leads all teams with five semifinalists, Lake Highland Prep has four and Belle Vernon has three. Nine other schools have two.

-Thirty-four different schools have at least one semifinalist.

-Wyoming Seminary leads the team race by twenty points over Lake Highland Prep. Wyoming Seminary still has 12wrestlers alive in the tournament, while Lake Highland Prep is the only other school with double digits (10).

-Pitt has four signees in the semis (120 – Lewis Newell, 138 – Cole Matthews, 138 – Jack Davis, 145 – Luke Kemerer)

-There will be four matches in the semis between ranked wrestlers.

-We still have the potential of two finals matches between Pennsylvania state champs at 126 (Gavin Teasdale/Sam Hillegas) and 182 (Trent Hidlay/Cody Mulligan)

-Gavin Teasdale is on pace to win a fourth title, Sam Hillegas, Cole Matthews, Josh Humphreys, and Trent Hidlay are all on track to win a second. However, Hillegas and Teasdale are at the same weight.

-Archbishop Moeller, Ohio’s Jordan Ward and Jake Thompson have the opportunity to become the first Powerade Champion from Ohio since the 2010 tournament when Walsh Jesuit’s Johnni DiJulius and Nate Skonieczny both won titles.
