NCAA DI Individual College Wrestling Rankings January 23, 2018

TheOpenMat.com has released it’s January 23, 2018, NCAA Division I Individual College Wrestling Rankings. Athletes who are known to be redshirting or are not currently on a roster are not ranked. During the season, wrestlers who miss two weeks of scheduled competition (excluding opens), will be removed from the rankings (with some exceptions based on available information). They will be returned to the rankings when they compete. Ineligible student-athletes are not ranked, even if they are competing in open tournaments and plan to return to the lineup in the second semester. When they return eligible, they will be ranked.

If information regarding year, record or win streak needs to be updated, contact rankings@theopenmat.com.

The lightest class continues to be one of the most intriguing as Spencer Lee (Iowa) upset Nathan Tomasello (Ohio State), Drew Mattin (Michigan) knocked off Ethan Lizak (Minnesota), and Ryan Millhof (Arizona State) secured a victory over Ronnie Bresser (Oregon State).  With three of the top eight falling, we've got quite a shake-up in the top-10.  The top two are easy enough, but three through nine is complicated.  None of those guys have ideal resumes anymore with each contender either having questionable losses (LaMont to Louie Hayes (Virginia), Lee to Bresser who is now ninth, Lizak to Mattin, Bresser to Millhof) or lacks top quality wins (Tomasello has just one in Lizak, Sebastian Rivera (Northwestern) has no top-10 wins, Lizak has only beaten Nick Piccininni (Oklahoma State).  Sean Fausz (NC State), who you might have noticed wasn't on either list, gets the call at number three due to his wins over LaMont and Piccininni. His only loss is to Daton Fix (Oklahoma State), who would be in this mix were he not redshirting.  Fausz doesn't have the number of matches against top quality opponents that some of the others have, but he has performed when he has gotten the chance.  LaMont slides in at five, just behind Lee, who is fourth with a 2-1 record against the top-10 and no other losses.  Tomasello has just three matches on the year which makes him difficult to evaluate. He and Rivera end up sixth and seventh, though the order there could be argued.  Lizak and Bresser end up eighth and ninth.  It is difficult to drop them any farther than that as the double-digit resumes are much less impressive than those of the top nine right now.
