Second-ranked junior Josh Asper earned his fifth pin of the season and improved to 19-0, but it was 20th-ranked Shane Gentry and Geoffrey Alexander’s early performances that propelled Maryland to its 12th dual victory.

Following an 8-4 decision for Gentry at 125 to open the meet, Alexander took command of his matchup against Ben Elliott within the first two minutes of the first period. The Pittsburgh, Pa., native recorded three takedowns halfway through the period and added a 3-point near-fall and a 2-point near-fall to close the frame. Alexander won a 19-2 technical fall and increased the Maryland lead to 8-0.

“The 125 pounder is the catalyst for everything,” said head coach Kerry McCoy. “It was a huge win for Shane. Geoff fed off of that. I tell our guys to focus on wrestling well. I think Geoff did a good job with that. He had confidence and went out there looking to score points. He knew he had to go out there and give a good performance for himself and his team.”

At 165, Asper quickly executed against Nijel Jones. The Parkton, Md., native tallied a takedown and 3-point near-fall within 35 seconds of the opening period. Asper added another takedown before pinning Jones with 1:25 remaining in the first period.

For the fifth straight dual meet, 12th-ranked Kyle John earned bonus points for the Terps. After pinning Navy’s Bobby Barnhisel Friday night, John won a major decision over Colton Palmer without surrendering a point.

“The guys wrestled well. It’s the first time in a while we put forth the overall, solid team effort. Things we were talking about and things we are doing are starting to show and it’s at the right time. We are peaking towards the end of the year. This is a solid win to show we are doing the right things,” McCoy said.

Maryland returns to action in Chapel Hill, N.C., Friday at 7 p.m. against the Tar Heels.

RESULTS

125: No. 20 Shane Gentry (MD) dec. Colin Fought (NCSU), 8-4 (3-0)
133: Geoffrey Alexander (MD) tech. fall over Ben Elliott (NCSU), 19-2, 4:46 (8-0)

After the Hokies claimed seven points from the first three matches, the Terps won six consecutive matches to secure a conference victory in Maryland’s ACC opener.

“The guys wrestled with the right attitude and the results showed,” said head coach Kerry McCoy. “It’s great to keep rolling and get our first conference win.”

Virginia Tech led 7-6 after the opening four matches, but John altered the momentum of the dual with a third period pin. The Coopersburg, Pa., native drove Matt Stephens to the mat and after several attempts was able to lock Stephens’ shoulders to the mat for the one count with 10 seconds remaining in the match.

“Kyle [John] getting the pin really opened things up,” said McCoy. “He has been a huge factor in our success and this weekend is a tribute to that.”

Following John’s victory, Asper took the mat against Yates in a highly anticipated matchup. After surrendering an early takedown, Asper responded with an escape and a takedown late in the first period. Asper dominated riding time in the second period and went on to win a 5-4 decision.

Fifthteenth-ranked Jimmy Sheptock earned bonus points with his third major decision this season, and Ty Snook clinched the Terrapin win with a 6-5 decision over John Dickson.

“West Virginia wrestled hard and did a good job,” said head coach Kerry McCoy. “We knew it was going to be a battle, but our guys rose to the challenge. We knew we had to win at least two of the first three to have a chance, so to get three [points] put us in a great position.”

“Kyle [John] put us in the driver seat with his major decision win,” said McCoy. Josh [Asper] and Jimmy [Sheptock]’s wins were crucial. It was a great win and a great way to start the second semester.”

Senior Kyle John, ranked 15th, finished second at 157 pounds. John picked up two victories including one by fall over Rutgers’ Joe McCauley 21 seconds into the match which is the fastest of his career and the 10th fastest fall in program history.

In addition to John, sophomore Shane Gentry and redshirt sophomore Jimmy Sheptock earned runner-up honors at 125 pounds and 174 pounds, respectively. Gentry won two matches, one by major decision and one by fall, before facing No. 3 Jarrod Patterson of Oklahoma in the final. Sheptock improved his record to 4-0 before losing a close final to No. 18 Greg Zannetti of Rutgers.

Sophomore Spencer Myers and freshman Geoffrey Alexander responded from early losses to finish third in their respective weight classes. Myers, ranked third at 285 pounds, was upset by Oklahoma’s Kyle Colling in the quarterfinals. Myers rebounded by winning all four matches in the consolation draw including a victory over No. 16 Elijah Madison of Oklahoma.

Alexander gained a measure of revenge by knocking off Clarion’s Joe Waltko in the third-place match after losing to Waltko in the quarterfinals of the main draw.
