“This recruiting class is highlighted by four wrestlers that are in the top-tier of prep wrestling,” Turnbull says. “We believe that each of them will contribute to our program and will continue to uphold the high-quality of competition that we bring to the mat.”

Jason Luster (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic), A.J. Vizcarrondo (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Seminary), Jared Browning (Jensen Beach, Fla./Jensen Beach) and Cory Stainbrook (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) each signed letters of intent.

Luster is currently competing in the 160-pound weight class at Pittsburgh Central Catholic and is ranked as the 41st-best wrestler overall, 14th-best wrestler in the country in that weight class and the third-best wrestler in the state of Pennsylvania at that weight.

During his junior year, Luster compiled a 37-2 overall record and placed second in the PIAA state wrestling tournament. Luster placed first at the 2010 Best of the East Tournament and the 2010 Ironman Tournament. Luster also was a contributor on the Central Catholic football team.

“Jason is really one of the best wrestlers in Pennsylvania, and we are looking forward to having him here,” says Turnbull. “He has wrestled under the tutelage of Sonny Abe over the last few years, which means he will come into our room well-coached and having great technique.”

Vizcarrondo currently competes in the 220-pound weight class and is ranked as the 89th-best wrestler overall and fifth-best wrestler in the country in his weight class by WRESTLING USA MAGAZINE. Vizcarrondo finished second in the national preps last year, was the NHSCA national champion as a sophomore, finished third at the 2010 Beast of the East Tournament and sixth and the 2010 ASICS Junior Nationals.

“A.J. Vizcarrondo is one of the better heavyweight wrestlers in the nation,” says Turnbull. “We believe he will step into our room and show that he can contribute immediately to our 197-pound heavyweight class. He will come into our program with refined technique that he was taught by his high school coach, Scott Green.”

Browning, who is an accomplished wrestler at 119-pounds, finished last season with a 44-2 record and has compiled a 119-8 career record. In the FHSAA state wrestling tournament, Browning has finished third, second and first over the previous three years. In the Super 32 Tournament, Browning finished eight out of 182 wrestlers.

Browning was named the Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers Wrestler of the Year as a junior.

“We have known about Jared for some time because he is coached by one of our former wrestlers, Tom McMath,” says Turnbull. “He has been exceptionally productive in the state of Florida, and we believe he has to the tools and intangibles to be a great collegiate wrestler.”

Stainbrook boasts a 113-23 career record during his time at Walsh Jesuit. At the OHSAA state wrestling tournament while wrestling at 102 pounds, Stainbrook finished sixth in his freshman year and third in his sophomore year. In his junior year while wrestling at 112 pounds, Stainbrook placed second.

He has also finished third at the 2010 Ironman Tournament, third at the Powerade Christmas Wrestling Tournament, second at FloNationals and participated in the Disney Duals.

“Cory comes from one of the more prominent wrestling programs in the state of Ohio,” says Turnbull. “He has been exposed to some of the best wrestling within Ohio as well as throughout the country. We feel he has tremendous potential to be a contributor to this program.”

Va. (February 19, 2011) – Four victories by fall and a sweep of ten bouts gave the West Virginia wrestling team a 46-0 victory over Cleveland State on Saturday night at the WVU Coliseum.

With the win, WVU improves to 9-6 for the year and 4-2 in the Eastern Wrestling League while the Vikings fall to 3-13, 0-6 in the EWL.

“We treat each opponent the same,” says WVU coach Craig Turnbull. “We preach that the next one in front of us is the most important one. You have to treat each opponent the same and I think we did a good job with that tonight.”

Sophomore No. 21 Shane Young gave the team three points with a 6-1 decision over Cleveland State’s Ben Willeford. Young had two takedowns in the match with an escape and 2:05 of riding time for the win.

WVU redshirt freshman No. 13 Nathan Pennesi increased the lead to 7-0 with a 15-4 major decision over CSU’s Nick Flannery. Pennesi had seven near-fall points, two takedowns and a reversal in the match along with riding time.

West Virginia then earned two consecutive victories by fall as freshman Michael Morales earned a pin in 1:58 over CSU’s Josh Palivoda while redshirt senior No. 20 Brandon Rader added another in 4:52 over Viking Lawrence Cavello. The victories increased the Mountaineer lead to 19-0 after four bouts. Morales had a takedown before the fall while Rader had two takedowns and three near-fall points before the victory.

At 157 pounds, WVU’s redshirt junior Ryan Goodman earned his third major decision of the year with an 11-3 win over CSU’s Matt Donohoe to increase the team lead to 23-0. Goodman had three takedowns, a reversal and two near-fall points along with 2:46 of riding time in the win.

Redshirt senior No. 20 Donnie Jones added four points for the team with a 15-4 major decision over CSU’s No. 29-ranked Robbie Michaels. Jones has now won nine matches in a row and six consecutive EWL bouts to go a perfect 6-0 during the EWL dual meet season heading into the EWL Championships.

“Donnie’s match was critical for us,” Turnbull says. “Their guy (Michaels) had beaten a ranked Ethan Headlee from Pitt and has a good record this season. Donnie put it on him very well and it was a nice way for Donnie to go out. It was very fitting for both Donnie and (Brandon) Rader to get wins tonight for the final time at home.”

Alex Meade increased the WVU lead to 30-0 with a 13-6 decision over Aric Thurn of Cleveland State. Meade had five takedowns in the bout and a reversal in the match.

WVU’s No. 20 Matt Ryan quickly provided the team with another six points following a victory by fall in just 43 seconds over CSU’s Corbin Boone to increase the lead to 36-0. Senior Kyle Rooney added another fall over CSU’s Nick Anthony in 3:32 to give the team a 42-0 margin with one bout remaining.

Heavyweight Philip Mandzik assured a sweep with an 18-10 major decision over CSU’s Chris Weber. Mandzik scored eight takedowns in the final two periods with two escapes early on while allowing two takedowns and five escapes.

“No one outworks Philip,” Turnbull says. “He might not be the most athletic guy in the room, but he gives it his all every time out. If he loses to a guy, he’ll say, ‘I can get him next time.’ You have to love that attitude.”

The Mountaineers next compete at the EWL Championships on March 6 in Bloomsburg, Pa.

Va. (February 18, 2011)– An Edinboro decision victory at
197 pounds by No. 24 Shawn Fendone over West Virginia senior Kyle Rooney allowed the Fighting Scots to gain a 16-15 advantage on its way to
a22-15 win over the Mountaineers Friday night at the WVU Coliseum.

With the loss, WVU falls to 8-6, 3-2 in the Eastern Wrestling League while Edinboro improves to 9-9-1, 4-1 in the EWL.

“We had opportunities to get the win and we wrestled 80 percent of the time, but this one got away from us,” says WVU coach Craig Turnbull. “The effort was there, but we didn’t close it out and they earned the win.”

Sophomore Shane Young grabbed quick points for West Virginia with a victory by fall over Edinboro’s Bijan Banks in 2:35 to give the Mountaineers a 6-0 lead after the first bout.

No. 15 Eric Morrill of Edinboro cut the WVU lead to 6-3 with a decision win over No. 13Nathan Pennesi. Pennesi earned three escape points in the bout but could not overcome three Morrill take downs in the loss.

Rader had two reversals and a take down in the match.

“Brandon(Rader) was thinking a little too much offensively instead of countering Edinboro’s single attack, so that match got away from us,”
Turnbull says.

Edinboro took control of the match by a 10-9 score when No. 23 Johnny Greisheimer earned a12-2 major decision over WVU red shirt junior Ryan Goodman. After a Goodman take down, Greisheimer had three near-fall points and three take downs en route to the win.

Va. (Jan. 13, 2011) – West Virginia University wrestling coach Craig Turnbull today announced the signing of 157/165-pound wrestler Alex Meade, a former No. 1 recruit in the country.

Meade, a Camden, Del., native, comes to WVU from Oklahoma State where he redshirted the 2008-09 season before competing last season at 165 pounds for the Cowboys. He will compete at 157 pounds for the Mountaineers and is eligible to compete immediately as a redshirt sophomore.

“Out of high school, Alex was one of the top recruits in the country,” Turnbull says. “He visited many schools, including West Virginia, and received attention nationwide. He and his father felt that Coach (Greg) Jones would be an outstanding mentor both from a wrestling and personal perspective. They were very impressed with everything that they saw. Coach Jones and Alex share the same athletic background and style of wrestling.”

At Caesar Rodney High, Meade compiled an impressive 125-4 record throughout his career, including 39-0 as a junior and 44-0 as a senior. A three-time state champion, Meade was also a member of the Junior World team, a two-time Beast of the East champion and two-time FILA cadet freestyle national champion. He was recruited by some of the nation’s top programs, including offers from Iowa State, Ohio State and Nebraska.

Last season at Oklahoma State, he earned a 29-10 record, including a 15-3 mark in dual meets. He defeated four eventual All-Americans during the year, including three wins over Oklahoma’s Tyler Caldwell. He also defeated No. 2 Dustin Schlatter of Minnesota, No. 4 Ryan Morningstar of Iowa and Wyoming’s No. 11 Shane Onufer.

Meade placed fourth at the Big 12 Championships last year and earned a spot at the NCAA Championships. Before redshirting in 2008, he compiled a 19-2 record, which included a string of 12 straight victories. His 19 wins tied for the lead among OSU’s redshirts.

“He has a lot of potential and we hope to provide him with an environment that he can reach all of his goals and come out with a degree that’s useful to him,” Turnbull says.

Va. (Jan. 11, 2011) – Having achieved success both as a former West Virginia University wrestler and recent position as an assistant head coach, sixth-year coach Greg Jones has been promoted as an associate head coach, WVU coach Craig Turnbull announced today.

“Through his competitive career, Greg achieved a lot that many wrestlers don’t even come close to,” Turnbull says. “He won three NCAA Championships and was even named the Outstanding Wrestler at the NCAA Championships one year. Having one of the greatest wrestlers in the history of our program come back to coach for us is a tremendous benefit to the team. It has a tremendous ripple effect and transcends all areas of the program.”

A three-time national champion and All-American, Jones is looked upon not only for his coaching but also recruiting abilities.

‘Not only was Greg an outstanding wrestler, but the kind of person you would want in the program,” Turnbull said. “He was a good student, spoke well to the media, stood for all the right values, had a solid work ethic, and he carries that into his coaching career.”

As a Mountaineer, Jones went 126-4 over his four years and was a four-time Eastern Wrestling League champion in the 174-lb weight class. He ended his career with a 51-match win streak.

“My belief is that he will be as good of a coach as he was a wrestler,” Turnbull says. “As he continues to mature into the profession, he is going to assume more and more responsibilities. The title change is very appropriate and well-deserved.“
