The Sun Devils (7-10, 3-2 Pac-12) earned victories in six of the 10 weight classes on Senior Day, pulling away from the Cardinal (8-7, 3-2 Pac-12) to win its second consecutive dual and build some momentum heading into the championship season.

Kevin Radford started a string of three consecutive victories to start the dual with a 5-3 decision over Mark Phillips to give ASU the 3-0 lead

The victory prefaced redshirt freshman Chace Eskam’s first career victory in an exciting bout at 197 pounds against Stanford’s Alan Yen. Yen had a late escape in the third to tie the match at five and send it to overtime. In the sudden death overtime, the match was largely a stalemate until Eskam got position late and scored a takedown for the win to put ASU up 6-0.

At heavyweight, junior Levi Cooper kept fans on their feet as he and Stanford Dan Scherer also headed to overtime. After a scoreless sudden death period, Cooper was able to ride out Scherer in the first 30-second overtime and scored a quick escape in the second for the 3-2 victory and a 9-0 edge in the dual.

At 125 pounds, senior David Prado competed in his final dual at Wells Fargo Arena, falling to Matt Sencenbaugh but was able to hold the Cardinal to just a decision in the 8-1 loss as Stanford brought it to 9-3.

Fellow redshirt freshman Nathan Hoffer kept the momentum going as he dominated Alex Manley to the tune of a 9-1 major decision for his 17th victory of the season and giving the Sun Devils the 19-3 edge through six matches.
Redshirt freshman Shane McGough worked his magic at that point, pinning Stanford’s Jordan Bryan at the buzzer of the second frame. The win put ASU back on top 15-3 at the midway point. It was McGough 16th victory of the season and his seventh pin, leading all Sun Devils. McGough has scored 11 of his 16 victories with bonus points this year and his fourth pin in front of the home crowd.

Joel Smith, also a redshirt freshman, put the dual away with a 10-5 decision over Josh Lauderdale to put ASU up by 19 with three duals left.

ASU dropped three major decisions to close out the match at 157, 165 and 174 pounds – the last of which saw Eric Starksfall to top-ranked Nick Amuchastegui in both seniors final dual competitions of their careers – but because the Sun Devils were able to pull away early, the match was never in question.

The Sun Devils will now have about three weeks off to prepare for the Pac-12 Championships, set to take place in Boise, Idaho, beginning on Feb. 26.

184 Kevin Radford (Arizona State) won by decision over Spence Patrick (Stanford) 5-3. 3 0
197 Chace Eskam (Arizona State) won by decision over Alan Yen (Stanford) 7-5. 6 0
285 Levi Cooper (Arizona State) won by decision over Dan Scherer (Stanford) 3-2. 9 0
125 Matt Sencenbaugh (Stanford) won by decision over David Prado (Arizona State) 8-1. 9 3
133 Shane McGough (Arizona State) won by pin over Jordan Bryan (Stanford) 4:59. 15 3
141 Nathan Hoffer (Arizona State) won by major decision over Alex Manley (Stanford) 9-1. 19 3
149 Joel Smith (Arizona State) won by decision over Timmy Boone (Stanford) 10-5. 22 3
157 Garrett Schaner (Stanford) won by major decision over Hans Rasmusson (Arizona State) 9-1. 22 7
165 Bret Baumbach (Stanford) won by major decision over Rush Hall (Arizona State) 9-1. 22 11
174 Nick Amuchastegui (Stanford) won by major decision over Eric Starks (Arizona State) 9-0. 22 15

The Beavers battled back from a late deficit for the second consecutive dual to pull out the win, improving to 9-2 this season.

Roberts (133 pounds), Mangrum (141) and Sakaguchi (149) all picked up major decisions to end the day. Roberts was an 8-0 winner over Jordan Bryan, followed by Mangrum, who 16-6 over Alex Manley to become the season Beaver with 30 victories this season.

Clayton Jack (heavyweight) became the first to do so when he defeated Dan Scherer, 3-1.

Up 18-14 with one bout remaining, the Beavers had yet to officially gain the win but Sakaguchi left no doubt when he was a 9-1 winner over Timmy Boone. His win was his 29th of the season and extended his win streak to eight bouts.

The Beavers got into a deficit midway through the dual. The teams started at 157 pounds where RJ Pena was an 8-2 winner over Garrett Schaner. But Bret Baumbach (165), Nick Amuchastegui (174) and Spence Patrick (184) won via decision, technical fall and decision over Joe Latham, Cody Weishoff and Ty Vinson, respectively, to take an 11-3 lead.

Jack and Taylor Meeks, who propelled the Beavers to an 18-16 win over Boise State Friday by winning two consecutive bouts, also won Sunday and helped the Beavers to get within one. Meeks was a 14-1 major decision victor over Alan Yen at 197 and Jack won his 30th bout of the year – and 112th of his career – with the 3-1 win over Scherer.

Stanford’s Ryan Mango downed Pat Rollins, 10-6, at 125 pounds to get the Cardinal to a four-point advantage, but the OSU trio finished off the bout and ensured the Beavers would gain their ninth win of the season.

The Beavers will not compete this week as a team due to Oklahoma’s cancellation of a dual that was scheduled for Friday night at Gill Coliseum

ASU (6-10, 2-2) split the matches in the dual at five apiece with the Roadrunners, but logged each of its victories with bonus points to hold on for the final margin. It was a refreshing sight for a team that has come so close in numerous duals this season only to see bonus points from the other squad keep the Sun Devils without a W in the record column.

Senior Eric Starks got things rolling for ASU at 174 pounds with a 15-6 major decision over Brady Garner to put ASU up 4-0 right off the bat.

Redshirt freshman Kevin Radford scored his fourth consecutive victory at 184 pounds as he also scored a 15-4 major decision over Reuben Franklin to give ASU to 8-0 edge early.

After a CSUB decision at 197 pounds, Levi Cooper got back into the win column with a pin at the first-period buzzer over Frankie Hurtado in the heavyweight bout for his 21st victory of the season, leading all Sun Devils.

Leading 14-3 at that point, CSUB got a major decision at 125 pounds with Tyler Iwamura defeating Lucio Murrilo in the true freshman’s first ever collegiate contest, 9-0.

Frank Lomas earned a decision over Shane McGough at 133 pounds to bring the Roadrunners back within 14-10.

Redshirt freshmen Nathan Hoffer quickly put an end to that run with a pin in 2:14 over Dalton Kelley at 141 pounds andKyle McIntosh added a major decision over Erik Martinez at 149 pounds, 10-1, to effectively put the match away for the Sun Devils.

The Sun Devils will return home next weekend for the final dual of the 2012 season as the squad will face Stanford on Sunday, Feb. 5 for Senior Day, beginning at 2 p.m. PST

Pat Rollins opened the dual with a 12-2 major decision over Landon Hartley at 125 pounds for the redshirt freshman’s 22nd win of the season.

That 4-0 lead was pushed to 4-3 when Shawn Jones defeated James Roberts, 4-2, at 133 pounds.

Zalesky improved to 200-62-2 in his career and is the 13th active Division-I head coach to reach that milestone. He has 73 victories in six seasons at Oregon State (7-2 overall).

Drucker’s bout Sunday was not only his final one at Gill Coliseum, but also his first one of the 2011-12 season. He was a 12-6 victor over North Dakota State’s (4-6) Justin Solberg at 133 pounds and pushed the Beavers to their first points of the day after Pat Rollins was defeated, 16-6, by Trent Sprenkle at 125 pounds.

Drucker improved to 18-6 on the year.

Jack capped off the Beavers’ seven-point win by defeating Evan Knutson in the heavyweight boul, the final one of the day. He stretched his win streak to four bouts and improved to 28-1 this season and 110-35 for his career.

Both teams won four bouts through the first eight, and OSU did not manage to clinch the team win until the buzzer sounded on Jack’s match. The teams were tied at 13 entering the 197-pound bout featuring OSU’s Taylor Meeks and North Dakota State’s John Gusewelle.

Meeks was a 10-2 victor in the bout, the Beavers’ second and final major decision on the day. He improved to 15-6 in 2011-12.

Sprenkle’s 16-6 win was North Dakota State’s only major decision of the day.

Mike Mangrum stretched his win streak to 10 with a 16-5 major decision over Tyler Diamond, at 141 pounds, to send OSU to a 7-4 lead which was stretched to 10-4 when Scott Sakaguchi defeated Mark Erickson, 10-3, at 149.

Steven Monk and Tyler Johnson both won close decisions for North Dakota State to push the teams to a 10-10 stalemate. Monk was a 9-7 winner over RJ Pena at 157 while Erickson defeated fellow Bismarck (N.D.) high school graduate Joe Latham, 9-8.

Cody Weishoff made it two straight victories with an 11-4 win over Joseph Garner at 174, then watched as North Dakota State’s MacKain Stoll won 9-7 over Ty Vinson in a sudden victory period. That put the teams at 13-13, setting up Meeks’ and Jack’s wins.

The Beavers hit the road next weekend and take on Boise State Friday night at 6 p.m. PT and Stanford on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Rollins’ pin was his eighth of the season and 21st victory overall and opened the match with the Bears in front of 814 fans. Later, RJ Pena (157 pounds) and Clayton Jack (heavyweight) also won via falls as the Beavers took home eight individual wins on the night to improve to 6-2 this season.

The win also gave head coach Jim Zalesky his 199th career victory. He will have an opportunity for No. 200 on Sunday against North Dakota State. That would make him the 13th active Division-I head coach to reach that milestone.

Rollins, Pena and Jack all earned their pins in the second period, while Cody Weishoff (174) and Taylor Meeks (197) won by major decisions to give the Beavers the 26-point victory.

Pena’s pin was his 18th of the season – putting him one shy of tying for the OSU sophomore record – and the 31st of his career. He downed Northern Colorado’s Charlie McMartin in 4:19. Pena is 23-7 on the year.

Jack continued his impressive season with a pin in 4:29 over Henry Chirino to end the dual. Jack jumped to 27-1 this season and 109-35 for his career; the 109 victories are 15th-most in team history.

Weishoff’s major decision, 10-1 over Josh VanTine, was his first since Jan. 1. He improved to 12-11 on the year and 1-1 at 174 pounds after moving up from 165. Ty Vinson, who was at 174 pounds until last weekend, was an 8-3 winner over Patrick Gomez at 184, pushing his mark to 17-10 in 2011-12.

Meeks snapped a four-bout losing streak with an 11-1 win over Nick Bayer. Up 7-1 entering the final seconds, Meeks picked up a three-point near fall and riding time to push his win to a major decision.

OSU won two other bouts via decisions. Mike Mangrum joined Jack in the 27-win club with a 7-4 victory over Casey Cruz at 141 points, while Scott Sakaguchi matched Mangrum with his own 7-4 win at 149 pounds. He defeated Justin Gonzalez to improve to 26-5 this season.

That matches Sakaguchi’s win total from the 2010-11 campaign.

The Beavers are slated to host North Dakota State Sunday at 2 p.m. PT. Because the Feb. 3 dual against Oklahoma has been canceled, Sunday’s event will be the Beavers’ senior day. Jack, Garrett Drucker and Jason Lara will be honored prior.

Tickets may be purchased over the phone (1-800-GOBEAVS) or in person. Fans are also invited to purchase them online at osubeavers.com and print them off at home before arriving at Gill Coliseum.

The announcement came about due to the scheduling of too many events on Oklahoma’s 2011-12 schedule.

The Beavers will not reschedule a dual for that day. Fans who have purchased tickets to the event, either via season tickets or on an individual event basis, will be refunded. For faster refunds, contact the Oregon State ticket office at 1-800-GOBEAVS or in person at the ticket office at Gill Coliseum.

Because the dual against Oklahoma was slated to be the Beavers’ final one at Gill Coliseum, Sunday’s matchup with North Dakota State will be celebrated as Senior Day. Seniors Garrett Drucker, Jason Lara and Clayton Jack will be honored prior to the team’s 2 p.m. dual with NDSU.
