NCAA DI Individual College Wrestling Rankings February 7, 2017

TheOpenMat.com has released its February 7, 2017, NCAA Division I Individual College Wrestling Rankings. Athletes who are known to be redshirting, injured for a prolonged amount of time or are known to be coming back the second semester are not ranked. During the season, wrestlers who miss two weeks of scheduled competition (excluding opens), will be removed from the rankings (with some exceptions based on available information). They will be returned to the rankings when they compete. Ineligible student-athletes are not ranked, even if they are competing in open tournaments and plan to return to the lineup in the second semester. When they return eligible, they will be ranked. *note these are not official records and include all wins and losses except the All-Star Classic.

If information regarding year, record or win streak needs to be updated, contact rankings@theopenmat.com.

When top-ranked Thomas Gilman (Iowa) rebounded from a big deficit to pin fourth-ranked Ethan Lizak (Minnesota), it kept the status quo intact. The top 11 spots are the same as last week. Lower down, there were a lot of losses last week that we had to account for. Shakur Laney (Ohio) fell to Jake Gromacki (Clarion). Gromacki has picked off several solid wrestlers this year but has a few too many losses to break into the top-20. Laney only falls one spot thanks to his three wins over wrestlers ranked closely behind him. Johnny Jiminez (Wisconsin) went to the Edinboro Open where he lost to the redshirting Ryan Millhof (Arizona State) and true freshman Nick Farro (Lehigh). The Millhof loss is expected, but the Farro loss hurts. Jiminez falls to #15. Brent Fleetwood (Central Michigan) is surging late in the year and is up to #16 after knocking off two-time All-American Connor Youtsey (Michigan). The Michigan senior is out of the rankings after a pair of losses this week. Kyle Akins (Buffalo) got his biggest win of the season when he upset Noah Gonser (Eastern Michigan). He makes his rankings debut at #18 while Gonser drops to #19. Sean Fausz (NC State) holds steady at #20 despite the chaos around him. We need to see a win over a ranked opponent from him at 125 before he can move up too much.
