Getting to Know: Isaac Bast, Kent State

Isaac Bast, Kent State

Throughout the off-season, we’re going to be getting to know returning NCAA Division I wrestlers from around the country.  We sent questionnaires to every program in the country and will be sharing the results throughout the long trek to next fall.  You can find them all whenever you like under the Getting to Know tag.

Name: Isaac Bast
School: Kent State
Class (for 2017-18): Redshirt Junior
Weight: 165

The difference between the schedule faced by back-ups or redshirts and that of a starter in Division I can be incredibly large.  Bast experienced that first hand after posting a 42-24 record over his first two years without earning a spot in the lineup.  This past year, Bast became the man at 165 for the Golden Flashes, only to suffer a 10-match losing streak from late November through mid-February.  That kind of skid, during which he clashed with strong opposition, could have crushed Bast, but instead, he responded with his best win of the year, knocking off Seldon Wright (Old Dominion), before he went 3-2 at the MAC tournament, finishing fifth.  That resilience suggests we’ll see an even better version of Bast in 2017-18.
