Getting to Know: Wade Hodges, Maryland

Wade Hodges, Maryland

Throughout the off-season, we’re going to be getting to know returning NCAA Division I wrestlers from around the country.  We sent questionnaires to every program in the country and will be sharing the results throughout the long trek to next fall.  You can find them all whenever you like under the Getting to Know tag.

Name: Wade Hodges

School: University of Maryland

Class (for 2017-18): Redshirt Sophomore

Weight: 157

After being thrust into the starting line-up at 149 pounds as a true freshman and struggling to find his footing, Hodges redshirted last year and moved up to 157.  He found a good deal more success wrestling unattached, winning the Messiah Open on his way to a 16-7 record.  The four-time Ohio state place winner from Wauseon will be looking to challenge Justin Alexander for the starting spot with another sophomore, Danny Boychuck, in the mix as well.

Rate your 2016-17 season on a scale of 1-10?

I would rate my season a 7. I had lots of improvements in my offense, got a lot of wins but I still had seven losses and three of them came to the same person so that was a tough learning curve.

What are you working on this off-season?

This offseason the coaches have me working on my offense, my foot speed, and my finishing ability. Also, keeping a high pace from whistle to whistle.

Do you plan to wrestle freestyle or Greco in the off-season?

We are wrestling freestyle currently and getting ready for Universities!

What was the most interesting class you took this year?

The most interesting class I took this summer would be ENGL 462 which is American Folk Song and Ballad. The professor would literally bring a record player to class and play old records and stuff like that.

What was your favorite match this season?

My favorite match was probably when I wrestled the kid from NC State (Chandler Pyke) who was winning and in the third, I felt his tempo slow down and I ended up coming back and pinning him.

If you could wrestle one person, living or dead, who would it be?

I would love to wrestle my dad because he still thinks he could take me but deep down inside I know that I would mentally break him. Sorry, dad!

If you could change one rule in college wrestling what would it be?

I don’t like the refs deciding stalling on the edge because one guy could be pushing the pace the whole match and sprawl out of the circle and get hit for stalling. Too many questionable calls on the edge with that rule.

If you weren’t a wrestler, is there another sport or competitive activity you’d have pursued?

I think I would have pursued cross country or track if I didn’t wrestle. I ran in high school and had a good amount of success and won state titles in junior high for it as well.

When the season ended, what is the one food you had to eat?

When the season ended the one food I was craving the most was definitely flank steak. A dad of a girl I know makes the best flank steak I’ve ever had and it’s just soooo good.

What is your major and what would you like to do with it when you graduate?

I’m currently undecided, however, I would like to take over my dad’s job of being a Financial Advisor for Edward Jones! He helps people on the regular with their finances and gives life advice as well!
