TOM’s 2011 Red Shirt and Non-Starter Rankings

With the National Collegiate Open around the corner we decided we wanted to do an unofficial red shirt and non-starter top ten ranking.

We tried to be as accurate as possible based on the information have and could find. We in no way are trying to slight any wrestlers not ranked. If we have missed some individuals please send us information at ranking@theopenmat.com. We do plan on making an update in about four weeks. Also, we avoided guys who have been splitting time and or where we did not think a clear starter has been established.

Why did we do this? First, because we thought it would be interesting. Second, we wanted to get a snap shot of the future. Many of these wrestlers could become All-Americans and possibly National Champions. It also gives us some insight as to where programs may be in a year or two. As we stated, some data is hard to come by so take these with a grain of salt please.

  1. No Jake Deitchler?

  2. He yet to step on a mat

  3. Just wondering about Chris Spangler of ISU at 165/174, he has a win over tyler Caldwell this year, and currently riding the pine behind Sorenson.

And also just wondering if Luke Goettl of ISU was considered at 141…

  4. Adam he will be in the update, oversight

  5. Oh no biggie, its hard to keep tabs on everyone…I appreciate the rankings, especially for the RS’s cause at least we have something to go on…Thanks again!

  6. these are AWESOME

  7. Jake Ballweg from Iowa @ 149

  8. These are great nice to get to where they stand.

  9. Great to see some recognition to these guys who work so hard all year and get little credit!

  10. Jackson Hein just won a tournament where he beat Schiller and which Polizzi placed 3rd. The Flash Flanigan

  11. I don’t think these are set in stone.
IMO:Hein,Schiller&Polizzi are all great young wrestlers. At Cleveland State Polizzi beat Wilps, then got beat by Podish.Top 10 guys pretty even I think. Nice to have a little recognition for these kids!

  12. I think DeAngelis of OU should be in there @ 149…He beats Vernon in the room and has already whipped Cozart

  13. just to put in my two cents mike rhone at 125 is also looking very tough this year

  14. frank jerkovich

    I observed the MN/Wis match
so much extra bs that I could hardly figure what was going on on the mat

good thing the team score was posted

  15. Iowa fan here, but Mike Moreno, 174, Iowa State deserves some mention.

  16. Crap, just saw you had him at 165. Nice job, though I think he’ll end up at 74 when all is said and done.

  17. How could you not Rank Erik Spjut at 133, He has placed at 6 tournaments this year, MSO 2nd, Michigan State open 3rd, ESU Open 3rd, Nittany Lion Open 5th, Shorty Hitchcock 3rd and Appalachian State Open 1st. He has wins over Pearsall, Sherlock, Biddle, Ruland, Leadbeter, F. Colon(twice). He is coming off of major Knee surgery and has been getting better every week, He was wrestling in a huge knee brace through the end of December. I think he should have been mentioned!!

  18. I think maybe you should try reading the entire article. I think maybe you could simply bring that to our attention. I think if you had read the entire article you would realize we admit we may have missed some people and that we plan on up dating.

    That is what I think.

  19. Sorry if I came across upset but we don’t have alot of wrestlers to follow from Texas.

  20. Nick Fischer Penn State 165? He’s wrestled 4 duals — Lock Haven match was at 174 as injury replacement for Quentin Wright (Ed Ruth bumped to 184). All other matches this year are tourneys as a backup or non-scoring entry.

  21. Correction: 3 of Fischer’s 4 duals matches were as injury replacements for Wright — he wrestled 2x at 184 in the VA Duals.

  22. Not sure how you made the top 5 at 184. Both Nebraska kids are way better than the Lehigh kids. Samuels ran from Nakashima at Midlands.

  23. comments like this are not worth a response for numerous reasons.

  24. MIKE HILLOCK…. #1 #1 #1 #1 #1 #1

  25. No Keith Surber from Nebraska at 133 ? He was SR Nat champ. No idea what he did his red-shirt year.

  26. Missed a 285 Kyle Frey of Drexel will be abck for his senior season after a medical re-shirt. He was second in the oclonial in 2010, and was ranked as high as 18th in some polls in the 09-10 season. Placed at the Vegas Open in 09 with some quality wins.

  27. Keith Surber contracted mono and missed much of the season. Was diagnosed with it the Monday after his first open tournament in early November after struggling to finish matches. Cleared to wrestle a week before Midlands. Wrestled some opens but had a hard time finishing matches. Seems to have recovered from it now and getting his gas tank back and back to wrestling closer to as expected.

  28. Are you kidding? Damn, yes you are, this should be tweeted. with your permission, I will make that happen.
