No. 10 Wyoming Seminary Edges No. 1 Blair Academy, 31-27

Blair vs Wyoming Seminary

Kingston, PA. – In a showdown of the best two teams in the National Prep division, No. 10 Wyoming Seminary was successful in edging the number one team in the nation, Blair Academy, despite winning just six matches. Bonus points were the key as Wyoming Seminary scored three falls and won by injury default at 113.

The dual-meet started at 152 with Blair taking the first three matches by decision to lead, 9-0.  Austin Colley (182) earned the first pin of the night for Wyoming Seminary to make the score 9-6, but Blair promptly took 195 by decision and 220 by tech-fall to stretch their cushion to 11 points.  Mansur Abdul-Malik (Wyoming Seminary) pinned Kraig Correll (Blair Academy) in the second period at 285.  No. 11 Nick Incontrera (Blair Academy) responded with a 5-3 win at 106. The dual score stood at Blair 20, Sem 12, with six weights remaining, but the Blue Knights were up to the challenge.

At 113, Michael Colaiocco (Blair Academy) was forced to injury default to Mosha Schwartz (Wyoming Seminary).  That became the first of three straight wins as 2016 Walsh Jesuit Ironman tournament champion Beau Barlett (Wyoming Seminary) showed everyone in attendance why he is considered the top freshman in the nation as he obtained the fall over Junior National freestyle All-American Mike Madara (Blair Academy) in the first period and, at 126, National Prep champion Jack Davis (Wyoming Seminary) won a close, 3-2, match over Walsh Jesuit Ironman medalist Chris Cannon (Blair Academy). Cannon is also a National Prep champion.

Blair would rally to tie the dual when Zach Sherman won by decision and Malcolm Robinson (138) scored a major decision, but Alfonso Martinez (Wyoming Seminary) would have the last word, putting away Anthony DeMartino (Blair Academy), 11-2, to clinch the upset for the Blue Knights.

11th ranked Andrew Merola (160) was missing from the Blair lineup.  Both teams are expected to contend for the team title at the 82nd National Prep tournament next month at Lehigh University.
