BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Utah Valley University wrestling team had no problem on the road at South Dakota State Friday night as the Wolverines (5-3, 3-1 WWC) rolled to a 40-6 victory over the Jackrabbits (1-13-1, 0-6 GWC).
UVU won nine of the 10 bouts and its only loss was a forfeit that the Wolverines vacated at heavyweight. The Jacks too allowed two forfeits on the night as UVU’s two top wrestlers, Benjamin Kjar (125 lbs.) and Flint Ray (133 lbs.) both won their matches via forfeit.
“The guys wrestled well,” UVU head coach Greg Williams said. “You never know on a road trip, after flying and driving, how the legs are going to feel but our guys responded and looked good tonight.”
“Trevor Rupp continues to look strong and has really kind of caught fire, as he picked up another win. Richard Winger and Casen Eldredge too also picked up big conference wins for us.”
The dual began at 157 pounds and UVU’s Richard Winger got the Wolverines off and rolling as he defeated SDSU’s Nick Flynn by decision 11-6. At 165-pounds Jeb Clark then continued his hot steak as of late with another pin. Clark pinned the Jacks’ John Nething II in the third period (5:27).
With the Wolverines leading 9-0, UVU won the next three matches by major decision. Brad Darrington at 174 pounds started the major decision streak by defeating Rex Lyon 10-2. UVU 184-pounder Casen Eldredge then followed by holding Joe Rasmussen scoreless and downing him 8-0. Trevor Rupp (197 lbs.) finished the stretch with a 15-3 win over SDSU’s Cord Willers.
Following three consecutive forfeits, the Wolverines found themselves leading the dual 33-6.
In the final two matches of the evening UVU’s Justin Morrill (141 lbs.) and Josh Wilson (149 lbs.) finished off the match-up with two more wins.
Morrill took command of his bout right from the get-go and managed to win it over Tyler Johnson by major decision 13-0. Wilson on the other hand found himself in the tightest match of the night. Wilson scored a first period takedown to take a 2-0 lead and it proved to be all of the scoring he would need as he hung on to beat Andrew Youngblom 2-1.
In exhibition action UVU’s Avery Garner (149 lbs.) also picked up a win as he defeated Jimmy Hamilton by decision 11-4.
