Willie Saylor, Editor

The recent trend in wrestling recruiting has seen talented seniors give their verbal commitment earlier and earlier.

This year, nearly 75% of the top rated recruits verballed prior to the start of the NCAA’s official Early Signing Period, which began November 9th.

And while there are still several blue chippers still on the market, Grove City, PA’s Wes Phipps is no longer one of them.

Phipps placed 2nd and 3rd both in the state, and at NHSCA's.

Phipps, our #3 ranked 174lber, gave a commitment to defending National Champions Penn State on Tuesday evening.

Phipps was a state runner-up last season, losing nationally ranked Nate Brown, now at Lehigh, in the finals.

In 2010, Phipps placed 3rd in the PA State tournament. His loss that year came to 3x state finalist, Dirk Cowburn, who will now be Phipps teammate at PSU.

On the national scene, Phipps placed 3rd at NHSCA’s as a Junior at 171, and 2nd as a Freshman at 160lbs.

The signing of Phipps brings Penn State’s Class of 2012 to three, joining #1-Jimmy Gulibon (125) and Zach Beitz (149).

The Nittany Lions 2010 and 2011 recruiting classes were ranked 3rd and 4th, respectively.

Other Top Prospects to verbal in the last week were #9-Tim Lambert (125) to Nebraska, #9-Victor Peirera (165) to Cal Poly, #2-Jordan Rogers (184) to Oklahoma State, #7-Chaz Gresham (184) to Ohio, and #7-Ben Stroh (197) to Wyoming.
