The Northern Sun Conference handed out their wrestler of the week award and 149-pounder Edwin Cooper was named the NSIC Wrestler of the Week for the first time this year. The honor is the sixth award for Upper Iowa this year.

Cooper went 4-0 and scored 29.5 points thanks to four bonus-point victories in his debut for the Peacocks at the Loras Open in Dubuque, Iowa. The transfer earned wins by fall in his first two matches, a technical fall victory (17-2) in the semis and then defeated Kyle Williams of McKendree by fall just 1:42 seconds into the match. His three wins by fall came in a total time of 7:46 (4:04, 2:00, 1:42).

The #7 Peacock wrestling team opened their 2013-14 season at the Loras Open. The event featured 345 wrestlers and included schools like NCAA DI’s Illinois, Northern Iowa, Southern Illinois and Wisconsin as well as the NAIA’s #1 in Grandview. Upper Iowa sent 14 wrestlers down in Upper Iowa singlets to compete; all 14 attached wrestlers competed in the Gold Brackets. As a group, the Peacocks claimed two individual titles in the Gold Brackets and added a fourth place, two fifth places and a seventh place finish.

Leading the way for UIU was Cooper and senior Carl Broghammer. Broghammer was impressive going 3-0 in his run. The two-time NCAA third-place finisher picked up a pair of wins by fall (1:40, 4:23) to reach the finals. Broghammer won the title thanks to an 8-3 decision over Ricky Robertson of the University of Wisconsin.

The Peacocks will return to the mat this Thursday with a home dual against Waldorf College in Dorman Gym. The Peacocks and Warriors are set to start wrestling at 7 p.m. on Nov. 14.
