On the June 18 edition of On The Mat, Kyle Klingman and Doug Van Gelder talk with new Northern Colorado head wrestling coach Troy Nickerson and Wes Brisco, a professional wrestler who spent time in Total Nonstop Action and is the son of Jerry Brisco, who has quite the background in amateur and professional wrestling.

The National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum has a professional wrestling wing, which centers around superstars in the arena of professional wrestling with amateur wrestling background.

Kyle and Doug open the show talking about the numerous coaching changes in Division I, including Nickerson’s hire.

The discussion shifts to the upcoming Hall of Fame induction weekend down in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Kyle goes back to point to a match between Mike Mena and Eric Guerrero from the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.

In the show’s second segment, Kyle and Doug talk with Nickerson. Some of the topics discussed are Nickerson’s move from Iowa State, his career as a four-time All-American at Cornell, winning the NCAA championship shortly before the passing of his father, his goals and expectations at Northern Colorado and the state of the program.

In the show’s final segment, Kyle and Doug talk with Brisco, a two-time state high school placewinner in Florida who will be in Waterloo, Iowa for a wrestling card as part of the George Tragos/Lou Thesz Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame weekend in July. Brisco has been in Total Nonstop Action as well as New Japan Pro Wrestling.

Brisco talks about his high school wrestling career and then how he moved into professional wakeboarding before finding himself following in the footsteps of his father Jerry and his late uncle Jack, who was also an NCAA wrestling champion at Oklahoma State.
