On Thursday, day six (session 11) inside Jordal Amfi in Oslo, Norway, Team USA’s Greco-Roman squad finally had the opportunity to get on the mats.

On the first day of Greco action, Max Nowry (55kg), Pat Smith (72kg), Jesse Porter (77kg), and Ben Provisor (82kg)  were in the first grouping for the Red, White, and Blue to began their respective brackets.

The Americans were a combined 2-4 during the session. Here’s how the matches played out.

After starting Greco competition 0-2 as a team, Max Nowry got the Americans on the board with its first win. Nowry took out Sajjad Abbaspourragani of Iran with a dominant 10-1 tech.

After Nowry took an early 1-0 lead on stalling point against Iran, the American never looked back. Nowry tacked on three straight guts to take a 7-0 lead before being reversed by Iran. The reversal cut the deficit to 7-1, but that was as close as it got.

Nowry added a counter tilt for two more. A failed challenge for Iran ended the bout 10-1 in period one.

Unfortunately, Nowry’s fortune reversed in his second match. He lost via technical superiority to Armenia’s Norayr Hakhoyan, 9-0.

Nowry attempted an arm throw against the Armenian but was countered and it turned into a takedown the other way. Nowry lost his challenge (arguing a slip). He was put down trailing 3-0, and the match ended from there. A gut and then four points on a turn brought the match to a close.

Nowry awaits semifinal results to determine his fate.

After a bye in round one, No. 2 seeded Ben Provisor added Team USA’s second Greco win of the day in a tight 2-1 affair over Japan’s Satoki Mukai in the Round of 16.

After falling behind early on a passivity point, Provisor went into period two down 1-0. Provisor was able to counter an attempted throw at the edge with just under two minutes remaining. Ben was awarded a takedown and won by that same 2-1 score.

In the quarters, Ben wasn’t so successful. He was teched in the first period by Turkey’s Burhan Akbudak. After being hit for passivity, then a pair of leg fouls, and a five-point throw, the tech was secured, 10-0.

Provisor awaits semifinal results to determine his fate.

Jesse Porter dropped a tough one in his opener to Sweden’s Bogdan Kourinnoi by way of a 3-1 decision.

Throughout the match, both competitors collected a passivity point. The difference in the match, though, was that Sweden got a a lift while working on top. Porter was unable to score from the top after his passivity point.

Porter has was eliminated after Sweden fell in his next match.

Pat Smith lost a tight 4-3 contest in his opener against Valentin Petic (Moldova) with a 4-3 decision.

After falling behind 1-0 on passivity, Smith added a spin-behind takedown to take his first lead, 2-1. A takedown via body lock by Petic sent Smith to the break training 3-2.

In the second, we saw a passivity point in favor of the American to tie things at 3-3. However, Smith was reversed on the following sequence and fell behind 4-3 to Petic. The match would end with the same score.

Smith’s tournament is over after Armenia lost his next bout.
