G’Angelo Hancock Advances to Greco Semifinals in Oslo, Schultz and Roberts Still Alive

G’Angelo Hancock (USA) at the 2019 World Championships in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan in September 2019.

Friday, day seven (Session 13) inside Jordal Amfi in Oslo, Norway, has arrived. The men’s freestyle and women’s freestyle tournaments have concluded in Oslo. All that remains of the 2021 World Championships are days two, three, and four of the Greco-Roman completion.

In Session 13, four Americans were in action during the early morning action. First No.2-seeded Ben Provisor wrestled in repechage after a 1-1 showing on the first day of his 82kg Greco tournament. Additionally, fellow USA World Team members Dalton Roberts (60kg), G’Angelo Hancock (97kg), and Cohlton Schultz (130kg) started their brackets.

Team USA was 2-3 during the Session 13.

HERE’S HOW EACH PATCH WAS DECIDED

After a bye in the opening round, 2020 Olympian and No. 3-seeded G’Angelo Hancock stormed to a dominant 5-0 decision over Ibrahim Tigci of Turkey in the Round of 16.

After getting a passivity point, G’Angelo was able to turn his opponent from the top for a 3-0 lead. In the second, Hancock added a takedown from a front headlock to extend his lead to 5-0. The American preserved the shutout victory and advanced.

In the quarters, Hancock picked up right where he left off. After a passivity was called against Bulgaria’s 2018 World silver medalist Kiril Milov, Handcock made the most of his opportunity on top, adding a lift and throw for two, extending his lead, 3-0.

Later in the first, Hancock countered a Milvo throw attempted and got a takedown for himself. A failed challenge by Bulgaria on that takedown extended the lead to 6-0 at the break. There was no scoring in the second frame.

Hancock advances to the semifinals later today. He has outscored opponents 11-0 on the day thus far. G’Angelo will face No. 2, Alex Szoke of Hungary in the semifinals. Szoke is a fellow 2020 Olympian.

Cohlton Schultz got things started in the session for the USA against 2020 Olympic silver medalist Iakobi Kajaia of Georgia. Schultz fought hard, exhausting his Georgian opponent by the end of the match, but the Arizona State big man lost 5-3.

Schultz gave up the match’s first point on passivity. Georgia added turns to put Cohlton in a 5-0 hole early in the first. But Schultz added a two-point reversal with exposure to cut the deficit in half, heading to period two.

Cohlton added another passivity point in the final period but couldn’t get the turn on top, losing narrowly, 5-3.

The American hopes the top-seeded Georgian advances to the gold-medal match to bring him back into the tournament tomorrow (Saturday).

At 60kg, Dalton Roberts was the last American to get his tournament started in Session 13. Unfortunately, after his first-round bye, Dalton dropped his opener 8-4 against Armenia’s Gevorg Gharibyan, who fought through injury to advance. Ultimately, a two-point throw and a four-point throw were too much to overcome.

Trailing 7-2 heading into period two, Dalton cut into the lead but lost 8-4. Step-outs and passivity points were the only points exchanged in the final period.

The American hopes the Armenian advances to the gold-medal match to bring him back into the tournament tomorrow (Saturday).

In the repechage, Provisor lost a tough 2-1 decision vs. Hungary’s Laszlo Szabo, a 2016 World bronze medalist. The Hungarian got it done with a passivity point and a step-out point. Provisor has a passivity point of his own but that was all.

With the loss, Provisor has been eliminated from the 2021 World Championships.
