High school wrestling will end 2017 with a bang as one of the nation’s toughest regular season tournaments takes place this Friday and Saturday at Canon-McMillan High School in Western Pennsylvania. Three of the top 30 teams in the country and three number one ranked wrestlers will be in action fighting for titles at the Powerade Wrestling Tournament. Two-time defending team champions Wyoming Seminary will look to add another tournament title to their collection, as will five of the 2016 individual champions.
The Powerade is a quirky, yet fun tournament. If you have glanced at the pre-seeds, you’ll notice that no freshmen have earned top eight seeds, even ones that may have placed in large tournaments previously this season. Seeding heavily favors past performance at the Powerade, as well as your individual state tournaments. Therefore, it is not uncommon to see brackets getting blown up as a freshman explodes onto the scene. Also, since this is one of the most wrestling-rich regions of the country, you’ll often times see local kids that are unable to place or even qualify for the state tournament in Pennsylvania knock off high seeds and state champions from visiting states.
