NCAA DI Individual College Wrestling Rankings February 6, 2018

TheOpenMat.com has released it’s February 6, 2018, NCAA Division I Individual College Wrestling Rankings. Athletes who are known to be redshirting or are not currently on a roster are not ranked. During the season, wrestlers who miss two weeks of scheduled competition (excluding opens), will be removed from the rankings (with some exceptions based on available information). They will be returned to the rankings when they compete. Ineligible student-athletes are not ranked, even if they are competing in open tournaments and plan to return to the lineup in the second semester. When they return eligible, they will be ranked.

If information regarding year, record or win streak needs to be updated, contact rankings@theopenmat.com.

Luke Welch's (Purdue) loss to true freshman Rayvon Foley (Michigan State) resulted in Drew Mattin (Michigan) jumping up several spots. Let me explain. Mattin's resume includes excellent wins over Sean Russell (Edinboro) and Ethan Lizak (Minnesota), among others, but he had lost twice to Welch. The Boilermaker's overall body of work aside from their two meetings wasn't quite as good, but Mattin's resume wasn't so much stronger that it could overcome the pair of head to head losses. With the loss to Foley, however, I believe we've finally reached that point. Once Mattin moved ahead of Welch, I had to look at each wrestler's overall resume and compare it to the Wolverine's to see how high he should climb. He eventually settles 12th. This is one of the most infuriating parts of rankings. Head to head is a key factor, but it doesn't outweigh everything else. Determining how much other evidence is needed to override it, especially in a case like this one where the wrestler with the lesser body of work was 2-0 in the series, is a vital decision that can reverberate throughout the rest of the rankings. Welch drops to 16th and Foley sneaks in at number 20 as Jake Gromacki (Clarion) drops out due to inactivity. The 20th spot was a tough call with wrestlers such as Connor Brown (South Dakota State), Brock Hudkins (Northern Illinois), Michael McGee (Old Dominion), JR Wert (Rider), and Barlow McGhee (Missouri) among a large group receiving consideration. They all have solid wins and questionable losses. In the end, it was Foley's wins over others in that group of just out wrestlers that carried the day.
