TOM’s NCAA Wrestling Dual of the Week: #4 NC State vs. #9 Virginia Tech

NC State vs. Virginia Tech

Here we go again. The top-two teams in the ACC over the last four years enter their annual showdown undefeated in the ACC for the third-consecutive season. Fourth-ranked NC State and ninth-ranked Virginia Tech have developed into programs that can contend for a team trophy nationally, something the Hokies achieved in 2016. While NC State enters as the team to beat, they have not yet been able to wrestle away the regular season title from their rivals. Friday night, February 16th, 2018 at 7:30 pm eastern time, they'll get that chance on their home turf inside Reynolds Coliseum.

NC State leads the all-time series 31-27-1, but Virginia Tech has been closing fast. The Hokies have won the last nine meetings between the teams including a 20-14 triumph last year. The Wolfpack haven't beaten the team from Blacksburg since the 2007-08 season, when they won 21-19 at home. In recent years, these two squads have run roughshod over the rest of the conference. Virginia Tech hasn't lost an ACC dual since dropping one to Pitt in February of 2014, winning 20 in a row since. NC State hasn't fallen to anyone in the conference other than the Hokies since a January 2015 loss to Duke.

As always with our Dual of the Week, we’ll break down each match-up, what each team needs to do to win, make our predictions, and have WrestleStat’s take on the dual as well.
