NCAA DI Individual College Wrestling Rankings March 6, 2018

TheOpenMat.com has released it’s March 6, 2018, NCAA Division I Individual College Wrestling Rankings. Athletes who are known to be redshirting or are not currently on a roster are not ranked. During the season, wrestlers who miss two weeks of scheduled competition (excluding opens), will be removed from the rankings (with some exceptions based on available information). They will be returned to the rankings when they compete. Ineligible student-athletes are not ranked, even if they are competing in open tournaments and plan to return to the lineup in the second semester. When they return eligible, they will be ranked.

If information regarding year, record or win streak needs to be updated, contact rankings@theopenmat.com.

Nathan Tomasello's (Ohio State) Big Ten title included reversing his prior loss to Spencer Lee (Iowa). However, Nick Suriano (Rutgers) reached the semifinals and defaulted out which leaves him without a loss, even though he finished sixth. That raises an interesting question for the seeding committee, with conference finish being a part of the rubric. However, winning percentage is also a factor and Tomasello's wins, while better than Suriano's aren't so much better that I'd be comfortable jumping the Buckeye into second.

Taylor LaMont (Utah Valley) returned to the mat at the Big 12 tournament but was upset by Zeke Moisey (West Virginia) before finishing third. LaMont had beaten Moisey twice early in the season and he owns a head-to-head win over Lizak as well. With Lizak beating Sebastian Rivera (Northwestern) to move right behind LaMont, it made sense for the Utah Valley freshman to stay put. His body of work is still solid. Moisey moved up one spot to 13th with the win, but he has a loss to Sean Russell (Edinboro) and two to Nick Piccininni (Oklahoma State) which limited his gains.

Drew Mattin (Michigan) and Christian Moody (Oklahoma) both lost multiple times to wrestlers ranked behind them, falling hard to 19th and 20th respectively. Rayvon Foley (Michigan State), Jay Schwarm (Northern Iowa), and Travis Piotrowski (Illinois) helped make that happen so they all bump up two places from last week. Connor Brown (South Dakota State) made his case to crack the top-20 by beating Moody after the Sooner beat him earlier in the tournament, but Moody owned a prior win this season, making him 2-1, and has better other wins bolstering his resume.
