Throughout the off-season, we’re going to be getting to know returning NCAA Division I wrestlers from around the country. We sent questionnaires to every DI program and will be sharing the results throughout the long trek to next fall. You can find them all, including last year’s interviews, whenever you like under the Getting to Know tag.
Name: Eric Schultz
Class: Redshirt Sophomore
Coming off of a prolific redshirt season as a true freshman, Schultz hit the lineup for the Cornhuskers and locked down the 197-pound spot. After close misses against quality opponents early in the season, he notched an upset over 2017 All-American Kevin Beazley (Michigan) in early February. Eric punched his ticket to the NCAA tournament with a seventh-place finish at the Big Ten tournament. He won a pair of bouts in Cleveland including knocking off 13-seed Jeric Kasunic (American), 3-2. Schultz is one of six NCAA qualifiers returning next season for the Cornhuskers who didn’t feature single upperclassman starter in the five heaviest weights last season.
What games does your team play on the road? Who is the best at it? Who is the worst?
The team had played poker prior to this past year but since our team was so young we stopped doing that. In place of that, we just downloaded a bunch of movies and saw who watched the best one. I was definitely the best while everyone else was just about the same.
What words or phrases does your coach use way too much? Why is he so obsessed with it?
“Holy Buckets”, is definitely my favorite one used by Coach Manning while “God Bless America” comes in a close second.
If you could pick any one of your teammates to win a national title next year, who would it be and why?
Trick question. I want all of us to win a National Title next year. We won’t be beat as a team if we have 10 national champions on our team.
Who is your favorite current college wrestler who is on a different team and why are they your favorite?
That’s a tough one but I’d have to go with Kyle Snyder. I know he is graduating this year but that dude is my favorite because he never stops looking to score and gets a lot of takedowns which is how I want to wrestle by the time I graduate.
If you could be any size tomorrow, who would you want to wrestle and why?
Holy Buckets it would be my teammate Tyler Berger for sure. I’d want to wrestle him so I could run him through a wall and have him stop talking so much smack about how he could beat me.
