This week’s High School Wrestler of the Week, Matt Ramos of Lockport, Illinois earns the honor after capturing a Cadet world championship at 51 kg in Zagreb, Croatia. Ramos was the only member of the men’s freestyle team that came home with a gold medal. Trailing late in the second period of his championship bout, Matt pinned Kota Takahashi (Japan) to clinch his world title. That was not the only dramatic victory in Ramos’ championship run, in the semifinals, he defeated Asian bronze medalist Seyederfan Jafariangelyerdi (Iran) 2-2 on criteria. Matt was one of six medalists for a US team that took second place overall in the men’s freestyle competition. Though he is now a world champion, Ramos head into his senior year of high school looking to win his first Illinois state title. He was third as a junior and fifth in 2016-17. Currently, Matt is ranked second in the nation at 113 lbs.
