NCAA DI Individual College Wrestling Rankings November 20th, 2018

TheOpenMat.com has released it’s November 13th, 2018, NCAA Division I Individual College Wrestling Rankings. Athletes who are known to be redshirting or are not currently on a roster are not ranked. During the season, wrestlers who miss two weeks of scheduled competition (excluding opens), will be removed from the rankings (with some exceptions based on available information). They will be returned to the rankings when they compete. Ineligible student-athletes are not ranked, even if they are competing in open tournaments and plan to return to the lineup in the second semester. When they return eligible, they will be ranked.

If information regarding year, record or win streak needs to be updated, contact rankings@theopenmat.com.

Top five ranked wrestlers Nick Piccininni (Oklahoma State) and Sean Russell (Minnesota) squared off with Piccininni getting the 3-0 win. The previous number six Zeke Moisey (Nebraska) has dropped after losing to Cole Verner (Wyoming). Cole has put together a solid 6-3 campaign, so far. He lost to Christian Moody (Oklahoma) at the Journeyman Collegiate Classic, so we’ll hold off on adding Verner until he puts together a solid track record. RayVon Foley (Michigan State) continues to rise after winning the Navy Classic. He picked up a pair of quality wins in Shakur Laney (Ohio) and Sidney Flores (Air Force). Connor Brown (Wisconsin) injury defaulted out of his match with Moisey. Of course, we’ll have to watch for Brown’s status going forward.

133

Like 125, there was a high profile matchup in the Oklahoma State/Minnesota dual, and Daton Fix (Oklahoma State) got a huge win over Ethan Lizak (Minnesota). Scott Parker (Lehigh) did not wrestle in the Mountain Hawks dual with Michigan. If he misses Lehigh’s next match, he’ll get temporarily taken out. Chaz Tucker (Cornell) wrestled up at 141 lbs in Cornell’s two duals with the absence of Yianni Diakomihalis. Once Yianni returns, we’ll have a better grasp on the starter for the Big Red. Montorie Bridges (Wyoming) drops after losing in a dual to Tucker Sjomeling (Nebraska). After losing to John Erneste (Missouri), Korbin Myers (Virginia Tech) defeated Colin Valdiviez (Northwestern), who was previously ranked above him at 19.

141

At this weight, like the two previous ones, it was impacted by the Oklahoma State/Minnesota dual. Mitch McKee (Minnesota) finally got a win over Kaid Brock (Oklahoma State). The pair had met frequently the last two years, while at 133 lbs, and Brock had taken those previous meetings. Nic Gil (Navy) and Sa’Derian Perry (Old Dominion) met in the Navy Classic finals, with Gil emerging as a 7-6 winner. He moves up slightly; as his only loss, this year came to Joey McKenna (Ohio State). After a strong two-week stretch, Matt Findlay (Utah Valley) appears in the rankings for the first time at #14. Findlay went 4-0 this weekend and defeated Tristan Moran (Wisconsin)  10-5.

149

Boo Lewallen (Oklahoma State) had to default out of his match with Henry Pohlmeyer (South Dakota State) due to injury. We’ll keep an eye out to see how he recovers. In the meantime, the Cowboys have a top redshirt freshman Kaden Gfeller in his place. Gfeller was victorious in the Minnesota dual against Tommy Thorn. Paul Fox (Stanford) was taken out and moved up to 157 lbs, as he will not be competing at 149 this year. Josh Maruca (Arizona State) had a rough weekend, losing by major to Micah Jordan (Ohio State), after also falling to freshman Austin O’Connor (North Carolina). Another wrestler that went 0-2 this week was Ryan Blees (Virginia Tech) who lost to Grant Leeth (Missouri) and Shayne Oster (Northwestern). Josh Heil (Campbell) returns to the top 20 after winning the Navy Classic.

157

The top nine remains intact, untouched from last week. Luke Weiland drops after his loss at the Black Knight Invitational to unranked Dan Reed (Columbia). Reed would also beat Alex Klucker (Lock Haven) at the same event. We have Reed on the watch list, as he is a senior without much of a track record nationally. The last four wrestlers in the top 20, Shomers, Willits, Krueger, and Pagdilao, all lost to opponents that were currently ranked higher, so they’ll hold for now.

165

As expected, we have removed Joseph Smith (Oklahoma State) and inserted Chandler Rogers (Oklahoma State) into the rankings at 165 lbs. They happen to be in the same spot, but that’s just coincidental. Rogers defeated Logan Massa (Michigan) last year at the NCAA Championships, so it works out that way. Jon Jay Chavez (Cornell) has been removed as he will sit out the entire first semester. Branson Ashworth (Wyoming) moves up after a big win over Isaiah White (Nebraska). Mekhi Lewis (Virginia Tech) lost his first match of the season to Connor Flynn (Missouri) and slid down behind him. Number’s 17-19 all lost to top eight competitors, so they get the benefit of the doubt, for now. Jon Viruet, an NCAA qualifier for Brown, enters the rankings after winning the Navy Classic and the Bearcat Open.

174

Like 165, we had to make modifications based on the Oklahoma State lineup. Chandler Rogers is down at 165, so, for now, Jacobe Smith is the guy at 174. Freshman Mike Labriola (Nebraska) suffered his first loss of the year to Ryan Christensen (Wisconsin), who had a huge weekend. Christensen pinned Labriola and also defeated Kimball Bastian (Utah Valley) and tough freshman Travis Stefanik (Princeton). Brit Wilson (Northern Illinois) makes his first appearance in the rankings after knocking off Bastian, as well. Wilson also has majored NCAA qualifiers Lorenzo De La Riva (North Dakota State) and Drew Hughes (Michigan State).

184

The top 14 holds steady from last week. In his first time in a Bearcat singlet, Louie DePrez (Binghamton) dropped a match at the Black Knight Invitational to Corey Hazel (Lock Haven). Cameron Caffey (Michigan State) won his second tournament of the year and moved up slightly. An 0-2 weekend moves Kevin Parker (Princeton) out of the top 20 and which makes way for Kordell Norfleet (Arizona State).

197

No huge changes here. Jackson Striggow (Michigan) was at 19. He lost to Lehigh’s Jake Jakobsen in their dual meet. For now, we’re keeping Chris Weiler (Lehigh) in for the Mountain Hawks; however, that could change.

285

We’ve got significant changes at the top of the rankings. Nick Nevills (Penn State) was defeated soundly by his teammate Anthony Cassar (Penn State) in the semis of the Keystone Classic. Cassar then went on and majored Joey Goodhart (Drexel) for the title. Gable Steveson (Minnesota) made his debut out of redshirt and cruised to a win over then-number four Derek White (Oklahoma State). The only other notable result from this week was that in a battle of freshmen heavyweights Trent Hillger (Wisconsin) edged Tate Orndorff (Utah Valley) in sudden victory.
