NCAA DI Individual College Wrestling Rankings November 6, 2018

TheOpenMat.com has released it’s November 6th, 2018, NCAA Division I Individual College Wrestling Rankings. Athletes who are known to be redshirting or are not currently on a roster are not ranked. During the season, wrestlers who miss two weeks of scheduled competition (excluding opens), will be removed from the rankings (with some exceptions based on available information). They will be returned to the rankings when they compete. Ineligible student-athletes are not ranked, even if they are competing in open tournaments and plan to return to the lineup in the second semester. When they return eligible, they will be ranked.

If information regarding year, record or win streak needs to be updated, contact rankings@theopenmat.com.

125 – The entire landscape of this weight class changes after Nick Suriano (Rutgers) moves up to 133 lbs. RayVon Foley (Michigan State) gets a boost up to 13 after winning the Michigan State Open over then 13th ranked Drew Mattin (Michigan). Freshman Patrick Glory (Princeton) breaks into the rankings at 15 after going 4-0 at the Princeton Open and majoring Devin Schroder (Purdue). Schroder made it to the Princeton Open finals by defeating Gabe Townsell (Stanford), so he’ll jump ahead of Townsell. A guy on the brink of a ranking at 125 is Colby Smith (Missouri). He teched a backup from Illinois during their dual meet. This week he’ll take on Michael McGee (Old Dominion). A win could catapult Smith into the top 20 next week.

133 – With Suriano moving up to 133 and going 3-0, we’ll slot him ahead of Ethan Lizak (Minnesota), who is also moving up from. The two did not meet last year, but Suriano had the higher NCAA placement. The former number 11, Colin Valdiviez (Northwestern) takes a tumble after a loss to Cam Sykora (North Dakota State). The Hokie Open made things interesting with Korbin Myers (Virginia Tech), losing to Noah Gonser (Campbell), who lost to Codi Russell (Appalachian State). We’ll keep an eye on Gonser/Russell going forward. Rico Montoya (Northern Colorado) has been taken out, as it is likely that he will not be the starter for Northern Colorado at 133 lbs. Ben Thornton (Purdue) is close to a ranking with his 5-0 performance at the Princeton Open.

141 – Mason Smith (Arizona State) has been dropped from the rankings after not participating in ASU ’s, and he’s currently off the roster. Josh Alber (Northern Iowa) falls slightly after a loss to Tristan Moran (Wisconsin) in the finals of the Cyclone Open; however, Moran had a loss himself to Bryan Lantry (Buffalo) in their school’s dual meet. Mike Carr (Illinois) and Nic Gil (Navy) do not drop after close losses to top-five opponents. Yahya Thomas (Northwestern) and Jamal Morris (NC State) break in after Sam Krivus (Virginia) is out of the top 20, following his loss to Paul Konrath (Indiana).

149 – The top 11 are in the same places as the last update. Alfred “Baby J” Bannister (Maryland) overs up significantly after a title at the Princeton Open. Most of the bottom half of the top 10, excluding Bannister, took a loss on the weekend. Henry Pohlmeyer (South Dakota State) is inserted after upsetting Tommy Thorn (Minnesota) at the Daktronics Open. Jarrett Degan (Iowa State) fell to true freshman Brock Mauller (Missouri) in the finals of the Cyclone Open. Ryan Blees (Virginia Tech), Austin O’Connor (North Carolina) and former 19th ranked Josh Heil (Campbell) all defeated each other and came in behind Mitch Finesilver (Duke) at the Hokie Open. Freshman Anthony Artalona (Penn) is one to watch after winning the Michigan State Open, however, did not knock off any ranked opponents.

157 – This weight looks a bit different than it did previously. Josh Shields (Arizona State) has been moved up to 165 lbs. Alec Pantaleo (Michigan) lost to freshman teammate Will Lewan (Michigan); however, he has a great track record and no one that should leapfrog him, so he’ll hold steady. Gordon Wolf (Lehigh) has been removed after wrestling in his intrasquad meet at 165 lbs. Alex Smythe (Buffalo) hops into the top 20 after an impressive victory over Zander Wick (Wisconsin). Dewey Krueger (Wyoming) had a 3-0 day at the Cowboy Open, with a win over a DII All-American Matt Malcolm (Nebraska-Kearney) and earned a ranking.

165 – Josh Shields (Arizona State) has moved up and gets placed ahead of Bryce Steiert (Northern Iowa) who lost in the finals of the Cyclone Open to Evan Wick (Wisconsin). Cooper Flynn (Missouri) drops four slots after a loss to Joey Gunther (Illinois). Thomas Bullard (NC State) was next up on the previous top 20, so he moves in this week, as does Stephen Glasgow (Rutgers) who went 3-0 in his Scarlet Knight debut. Bryce Martin (Indiana) drops out after losses to Cam Coy (Virginia) and Mekhi Lewis (Virginia Tech). Coy is on the cusp of a ranking with another good win or two. The previous number 20, Seldon Wright (Old Dominion) is pulled after a tech fall loss to Shane Griffith (Stanford) at the Princeton Open and then a second loss to Max Elling (Columbia).

174 – The top 12 remains the same after all 12 wrestlers either picked up wins or didn’t compete. Johnny Sebastian (Northwestern) moves up after a solid win over Lorenzo De La Riva (North Dakota State) and losses by Ben Harvey (Army West Point) and Drew Hughes (Michigan State). Harvey and Hughes fall in behind Matt Finesilver (Duke) who won the Hokie Open.

184 – Dakota Geer (Oklahoma State) now is the OSU representative at this weight instead of Jacobe Smith. Really there are a lot of moving parts with the Cowboy lineup. It could look drastically different from 165-184, but he’ll what we are going with for now.  Owen Webster (Minnesota) and Will Schany (Virginia) both drop out after losses and are replace by Kevin Parker (Princeton) and Cameron Caffey (Michigan State). Parker and Caffey both won their school’s respective open tournaments this weekend. Andrew McNally (Kent State) may be close to cracking the rankings for the first time. McNally won the Clarion Open and went undefeated in KSU’s duals; however, he did not have any signature wins.

197 – The majority of the movement at this weight came from the Princeton Open. Patrick Brucki (Princeton) won the event and beat Nathan Traxler (Stanford), who defeated Christian Brunner (Purdue). Also from Princeton, Brunner had a DQ win over Chris Weiler (Lehigh), who then lost a second match to an unranked opponent from Rider. As a result freshman Jake Woodley (Oklahoma) jumps ahead of Weiler on the strength of a Michigan State Open title. Malik McDonald (NC State) was previously ranked as a 285 lber but will be at 197.

285 – None of the previous top ten competed last week. The previously seventh-ranked Shawn Streck (Purdue) has been removed from the rankings after getting removed from the Boilermaker roster. We are still holding stud true freshman Gable Steveson (Minnesota) and Mason Parris (Michigan) out of the rankings until they compete officially for their schools, or if they do in 2018-19. Trent Hillger (Wisconsin) moves into the top 20 after winning a pair of matches at the Cyclone Open and a dual win over #20 Jake Gunning (Buffalo). Demetrius Thomas (Pittsburgh) was also quite impressive in his run to a Clarion Open crown.
