As we move closer to the 2019-20 season, it will be the sixth for head coach Keith Ferraro at the helm for Clarion. The Golden Eagles are coming off of a rough season that saw them finish sixth in the EWL and they only sent two wrestlers to the NCAA Tournament. More of the same in 2019-20, right? Actually, it could be the opposite. Looking deeper at the Clarion team, they were decimated by injuries a year ago. No one likes to make excuses like that and you won’t hear it from Ferraro, but they lost three national qualifiers to season-ending injuries by early December. Another promising freshman followed in January. Now with a fully healthy lineup on the mat and two veterans granted sixth-years of eligibility by the NCAA, Clarion could be a team that sneaks up on the rest of the country. One thing that has helped Ferraro and his staff is their ability to find the “right type” of recruits for their program. Pennsylvania is always littered with DI talent and they have found plenty of kids that were not deemed “blue-chip” recruits, but still, have turned out to be productive collegiates. Every time we’ve previewed a traditional EWL team we’ve mentioned that they will be a part of the new MAC conference. The two conferences have merged which should help Clarion with increased automatic qualifying bids at the MAC Tournament. Here is the group that could be taking the mat for Ferraro this fall.
