With a new season on the horizon, optimism abounds at most every DI wrestling program. Old Dominion is no different and as head coach Steve Martin gets ready to embark on his 16th season at the helm for the Monarchs, he can turn to an experienced group that is expected to contend for a conference title in the upgraded MAC Conference. Starting in 2019-20 the team that comprised the old Eastern Wrestling League will join the existing MAC schools to form a super-conference. Even with more competition from the likes of Lock Haven and Rider, ODU will be fighting for a spot in the upper echelon of the MAC. The Monarchs will be led by two All-Americans and a Round of 12 finisher. Though they do not have any other starters that have been national qualifiers in the past, Martin’s teams could roll out a lineup that was identical to their entries at the 2019 MAC Championships. Of course, some young freshmen could threaten to unseat their older incumbents. Since the arrival of assistant head coach Daryl Thomas in 2017-18, ODU has been snagging talented recruits from Thomas’ home state of Illinois by the handful. With an All-American in 2019, Old Dominion has now produced an AA in five of the last six seasons, which may surprise some. Will the Monarchs be able to make it six of seven years or perhaps have multiple AA’s for the second time in Martin’s tenure? Here is the group that will be attempting to accomplish those feats in 2019-20.
