2019-20 Early Lineup Look: Wyoming

Today’s Early Lineup Look delves into a Wyoming team that typically gets overlooked nationally, yet always seems to present tough matchups for its opponents. This year is no different as head coach Mark Branch returns six of his seven national qualifiers from a year ago. Nine of the ten wrestlers that represented Wyoming at the Big 12 Championships in 2019 are back and with only one freshman penciled into the lineup, it will be an experienced group. Don’t look now but Branch is starting his 12th year at the helm of a Cowboy program that has churned out six All-Americans under his watch. Before Branch’s arrival, there had been a 12-year drought in between AA’s. In each of the last two seasons, the Cowboys have posted identical 7-2 records in the Big 12 and have combined to win 29 of their 38 duals. This year’s veteran-laden squad should only help increase those numbers. Oddly enough, Wyoming was one of only two teams (Army West Point being the other) that were awarded three at-large berths to the 2019 NCAA Championships, so I’m sure that Branch and his staff would like to improve upon their disappointing seventh-place showing at the Big 12’s. Looking at the firepower that the Cowboys have returning next year, it’s pretty easy to picture them matching or improving upon their seven qualifiers from 2019.
