Super Regional II

Where: Coker College- Hartsville, South Carolina

When: Friday, February 22nd  All Day

Live: Trackwrestling

It can not really be said that any Super Regional is easier than another to qualify for the NCAA Division II National Wrestling Tournament. It comes down to just three qualifying spots available at each weight no matter where. That means there are going to be good wrestlers left sitting at home when the national tournament begins in Cleveland March 8th. With the changes to regional alignments, it could be said that there may be more favorable Super Regionals for qualifying though. There are going to be wrestlers in other regionals looking at the results that come out of Super Regional II and think, “I could have qualified there.” This could be the most competitive of all the Super Regionals though with a lot of balance between the 10 teams bringing their best.

Super Regional II is comprised of teams traditionally thought of as being located in the South. There are exceptions though with two teams from West Virginia also taking part and we know they are above that Mason-Dixon line. This is a chance for the South to rise again and we are going to see incredible wrestling in South Carolina. There are just two ranked teams in this regional with North Carolina-Pembroke the lone squad currently in the top 10 of the rankings* sitting at 10th. They have three wrestlers presently ranked as well, Newberry has two, while King and Ohio Valley each have one. No weight class has more than two ranked wrestlers and three of them have no one currently ranked in the top 12.

Dive in and follow along as I look at each weight class and predict the three wrestlers who will advance and the first wrestler out at each weight. As always, a huge thank you to Wrestlestat and their fledgling d2.wrestlestat.com site for help digging through records.

This is the second in our series of DII Super Regional Previews. Check out our preview for Super Region I, as well.
