If you look at this tournament, you would not be crazy to think of it as a battle between Wheeling Jesuit and Notre Dame. They are ranked third and fourth* and seem on a collision course in their team trophy battle. If you were going to pick a spoiler though in Super Regional III, look no further than the Indianapolis Greyhounds. They have six individuals ranked in the top 12 and if they can finish at or above seeds, they will have a shot at the upset.
This may be the toughest regional to predict, it has one of the highest numbers of ranked teams and by far the most individual wrestlers. There are two different weights where at least one ranked wrestler will miss out on a trip to Cleveland. No weights have fewer than two wrestlers currently ranked and six have three. Super Regional III is where you want to be if you like to see gladiators battling it out to the tune of John Denver’s “Take me home, country roads” because, for all the wrestlers who make it through, it will be almost heaven.
Dive in and follow along as I look at each weight class and predict the three wrestlers who will advance and the first wrestler out at each weight. As always, a huge thank you to Wrestlestat and their fledgling d2.wrestlestat.com site for help digging through records.
This is the third in our series of DII Super Regional Previews. Here are the previous two previews:
