Super Regional V: The Empire Strikes Back. Although, I am betting that St Cloud State University is hoping for a better result than what happens to the Empire in that series. They are certainly the evil entity in the universe of Division II wrestling at the moment. Unless of course, you are a fan. Head coach Steve Costanzo has built himself a dynasty on Interstate 94 and it will be up to the rest of the teams to try to save the galaxy.
There is no lack of depth at this Super Regional tournament with five teams ranked* in the top 25, and 24 wrestlers ranked in the top 12 of their weight classes. St Cloud State leads the way with 10 wrestlers currently ranked. Upper Iowa had an incredible run at their regional last season and followed it up with a very strong national tournament, they enter the postseason with four wrestlers ranked. Minnesota State Mankato brings three ranked wrestlers to the tournament and James Makovsky will need them to all wrestle their best if he has any dreams of knocking off St Cloud State.
Dive in and follow along as I look at each weight class and predict the three wrestlers who will advance and the first wrestler out at each weight. As always, a huge thank you to Wrestlestat and their fledgling d2.wrestlestat.com site for help digging through records.
