This week the Missouri Tigers got their second verbal commitment from a top-30 wrestler in the high school Class of 2020, when Rocky Elam (Staley, MO) announced his collegiate intentions. Rocky, the 29th ranked wrestler in the Class of 2020, will join his brother Zach, an NCAA qualifier at 285 lbs as a true freshman for the Tigers in 2018-19. The younger Elam recently won his first Missouri state title at 182 pounds after finishing third as a sophomore. Last summer, Rocky won a Cadet Freestyle national title in Fargo by defeating three other top-100 juniors in the process (#78 Nathan Haas – St. John Bosco, CA, #86 John Ponzanski – Colonia, NJ, and #89 Sam Fisher – Fauquier, VA). He had taken sixth in Cadet Freestyle the previous year. This season at the Super 32, Elam took third place, falling only to Abe Assad (Glenbard North, IL), who was the number one ranked wrestler in the nation at the time.
Elam joins #2 Keegan O’Toole (Arrowhead, WI) in the Mizzou recruiting Class of 2020. His commitment came just after our article was published regarding the top recruiting classes from 2020; otherwise, the Tigers would have made the top ten. Getting Rocky’s commitment was big for the Tigers as their current 184 lb starter, 2019 NCAA qualifier Dylan Wisman will be a senior in 2019-20. They also have a 2018 qualifier Canten Marriott at the weight so he could fill in if a redshirt is needed.
