BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State University wrestling head coach JohnMark Bentley announced his team’s schedule for the 2014-15 season on Wednesday, highlighted by seven home meets and an intense non-conference schedule.
“I am looking forward to the number of great home meets we have in Boone this year. It will be a great opportunity for us to build on our fanbase and get the student body involved,” Bentley said.. “We are wrestling a great in-state schedule with the addition of 3 Atlantic Coast Conference schools.”
Appalachian’s non-conference opponents feature two top-20 teams from the final Intermat polls from last season. The Mountaineers will face No. 13 Illinois on Nov. 14 and No. 19 North Carolina State on Dec. 17. In addition to the Illini and Wolfpack, the Mountaineers will face nine teams that finished ranked ahead of Appalachian in the final polls.
“The 2014-2015 schedule will be a tremendous test, and I believe our wrestlers are up for the challenge,” Bentley said. “Our schedule will definitely prepare our athletes for success at the NCAA’s in March!”
The NCAA tournament is set for March 19-21 but the Mountaineers will have to get through their challenging schedule first.
The fall season begins with the Mountaineer Duals, where the squad will face Cumberland University and Buffalo before traveling cross-country to take on Cal State Bakersfield. Staying on the west side of the country, the Mountaineers will participate in the Roadrunner Open, a tournament in which they finished sixth of 27 schools last year. A week later, Appalachian will compete in the Keystone Classic, a tournament that sophomore Dylan Cottrell claimed third place at last year in the 149-pound weight class.
In addition to facing NC State, the Mountaineers will also face ACC foes North Carolina on Nov. 30 in Boone and Duke on Jan. 31.
Appalachian’s conference schedule begins Jan. 7 against SIUE and will end Feb. 22 against Davidson. The 78th annual Southern Conference Wrestling Championships will start March 7 at Kimmel Arena in Asheville, N.C. The Mountaineers finished fourth at the league championships a year ago.
