We will have a new number one ranked wrestler at 149 lbs when the new set of rankings are released on Tuesday morning. Rutgers 149 lber Anthony Ashnault will assume the top spot in the country after majoring the previous number one Matt Kolodzik of Princeton 10-2. Entering the day both wrestlers were undefeated. The first period saw no scoring as both wrestlers were tentative and unwilling to get out of position. Kolodzik started the second period on the bottom against the dangerous Ashnault and got pancaked to his back for a quick two points before getting an escape. The sequence seemed to wake up Ashnault who proceeded to get in on the Tigers legs and captured a takedown to lead 4-1. Anthony continued to be the aggressor throughout the match and even scored again with a similar pancake-type move in defense of a Kolodzik sitout. With the win, Anthony moves ahead of Kolodzik in their head-to-head matchups, in college, three matches to two. It would not be a shock to see these same two wrestlers square off again Saturday night in Pittsburgh with a national title on the line.
This match was part of an inter-New Jersey rival between the two schools that are only separated by about 20 miles. The host Scarlet Knights came into the ranked 14th in the country while Princeton was right behind at 15. Rutgers came out on top 19-18 after getting a major decision from 285 lber Christian Colucci in the final match of the afternoon. Nick Suriano (133 lbs), John Van Brill (157 lbs), and Joe Grello (174 lbs), also picked up wins for the victors.
