Iowa State has posted a news release today stating that Austin Gomez will sit out the UWW Junior World Championships which are set to take place September 17th-23rd in Trnava, Slovakia. Gomez earned his spot at 61 kg by defeating Vito Arujau (Cornell) in a best-of-three series. Cyclones Head Coach Kevin Dresser stated that Austin “Injured his knee earlier this summer and it continues to be a nuisance, so we are going to get that cleaned up. We expect Austin back and ready to roll at the beginning of October.”

Gomez will be a redshirt freshman in 2018-19 and is the favorite to start at 133 lbs for Iowa State. While redshirting last season, Austin compiled an 8-0 record winning the Willie Myers Open, the Duhawk Open, and the Sioux City Dave Edmonds Open, competing unattached.

USA Wrestling has yet to address Gomez’s situation publicly, so at this time his replacement is unknown. After the Junior World Team Trials, Arujau won the 61 kg spot on the U23 World Team which competes November 12th-18th in Bucharest, Romania.
