EDMOND – Perennial power Central Oklahoma has added four state high school standouts to the program for next season, with that quartet combining for 12 state championships and nearly 500 career wins.
Signing with the Bronchos were Briar Stopp of Newkirk, Will Steltzlen of Collinsville, Jadon Davenport of Sallisaw and Caleb Hawes of Barnsdall, who each earned All-State honors this past season.
Stopp was a three-time Class 3A state champion for the Tigers, winning at three different weights. A projected 133-pounder for UCO, he finished with a 134-26 career record.
Steltzlen captured four Class 5A state titles at Collinsville, also at four different weights. Expected to be a 141- or 149-pounder in college, he led the Cardinals to the team championship as a senior and ended with a 131-23 career mark.
Davenport won three consecutive Class 4A crowns at 195 pounds for Sallisaw. A projected 184- or 197-pounder for the Bronchos, he went 115-11 for his career with the Black Diamonds.
Hawes was a three-time Class 3A finalist at Barnsdall, finishing runner-up at 182 pounds as a sophomore before winning back-to-back titles at 195 his last two season. He had a 112-17 career record and is expected to compete at 184 pounds of 197 in college.
“We’re excited to have these four young men join our program and expect a lot from them over the next four or five years,” said head coach David James, who has led UCO to 12 national championships during his 32-year tenure. “They all had excellent high school careers and are proven winners who will only continue to improve.”
