FERRUM, Va. – Paul Biggs and Sean Murphy scored pins to spark Ferrum College to a 33-15 non-conference wrestling win over visiting Washington and Lee University tonight at Swartz Gym in the Panthers’ inaugural varsity wrestling match.
The match began with the 285 pound bout between Ferrum’s Tate Dulany and W&L’s Grant Cokeley. Deadlocked 1-1 after regulation, Cokeley took Dulany down in overtime to win 3-1.
Ferrum picked up forfeit wins at 125 pounds, 133 and 141 with Robert Cunningham, Justin Zimmerman and Jamie Carr all getting their hands raised. Biggs then took Andrew Donchez down quickly at 149, and scored the pin in just under a minute at 0:55.
Murphy trailed Dan Igel 6-5 after two periods at 157, but escaped to open the third period and tie the match at 6-6. He then took Igel down, put him on his back and scored the pin with six seconds left in the match.
W&L’s Mac Evarts beat Jordan Felion 9-5 at 165, then Ron Tassoni won 7-3 for the Generals at 174 over Thomas Smith. Ferrum’s Corbin Ramos scored a 10-5 decision over Zac Richey at 184. In the final match of the night, Ferrum’s Darreus McCrea led 9-2 over Bennett Lewis late in the match, but was disqualified on an illegal slam call.
The win was the first for first-year Head Coach Nate Yetzer. Ferrum (1-0) returns to the mat Saturday, Nov. 24, at the King College Open in Bristol, Tennessee. Yetzer and company then travel to Colonial Heights, Virginia, Dec. 8 to compete at “Havoc in the Heights”, with a pair of dual matches against Middlesex County College and Liberty University.
